Of Model Railroad Scales, H0 Scale is Best

In the area that is model railroad, scale H0 is the most well-liked dimension by far. Of course this is not the case if you are reading this in sunny England — where larger scale trains are more typical.

Because of the popularity of this scale of model railroad, this article is going to focus on this model and some of the reasoning as to why it is the most popular. The H0 model railroad scales were first introduced to the public in approximately 1950 – almost immediately gaining significant fans. The introduction of this scale could almost be said that it came about rather out of necessity. In the 1950’s, the model train pastime was in a pretty significant down turn.

As the enthusiasts demanded more practicality and a better ability for creative design over this hobby of model trains, the H0 Scale was introduced and immediately won back many of the previous train fans.

The rationale for this was due to the fact that all of the model trains previously were regarded as too large or bulky. A consequence problem to these bigger trains was the fact that it really limited those that wanted to create realistic details to the surrounding “land” that the train tracks went through.

Since everything had to be much larger in scale to reflect the larger model trains– the owners of the larger scale model railroads couldn’t afford–and it makes sense, the larger your diorama needed to be the more would be spent in the supplies needed to create your small world. The H0 scale model trains have allowed for much more condensed pieces so that things can be built on a more detailed scale.

Being a true enthusiast, you can’t just have the train operating on bare tracks with no landscape!!

Nearly every person that collects or has a model railroad scale not making a difference, can remember the first time they got their first one!! Typically they start as such, “I was eleven years old when I got my first H0 model railroad; it had a red engine, two cars and a mustard yellow caboose. I was so excited to play with it that I could barely get the snap tracks connected completely. I setup a big oval of tracks and just ran the train round and round and round…. for at least an hour.” There is always a passion in the tone of these collectors.

Soon after the initial excitement wears off, the realization occurs that there is a need to improve upon what you have, which commonly is just the train and the tracks. This is where the creativity comes into play — creating grand schemes of what you are going to build: mountains, valleys, rivers and bridges to cross them, small towns.

It is this desire to build upon the simple model railroad, scale H0 being the perfect size to expand and create a world apart from this technologically driven one. These new designs will take some time to perfect and the first ones will have room for improvement, but as time passed you will be able to create much more realistic landscapes and remember that the costs will not be as expensive because of the railroad scale H0.

Of all hobbies out there, one that does not seem to grow old with time are that of model railroad scale models. The author is fascinated by all types of model railroad scales and discusses them at the blog here as well as posting current events and videos on model railroad scales here.

Matchbox Car Model Number System

Matchbox die-cast cars have always been assigned a model number. While the system created early on worked well for some time, it eventually began to become very confusing. This article will briefly explain the numbering system and changes over the years.

Each year the cars would simply be numbered 1 through 75 on the package. The actual model number would be MB# (# is the model number). The model number did not change from one year to the next unless a change was made. For example, the very first Matchbox ever, was the Road Roller in 1953, or model MB1. When a change was made, like the new paint color in 1956, the model number was changed to MB1b. This change still makes sense as it is the same vehicle with a slight variation. It follows suit that the model number should also remain the same, but with a slight variation. This basic version of the system is extremely easy but it will get complicated quickly.

In 1967, the Road Roller mentioned above, was removed from the line of vehicles and replaced with a Mercedes Truck. What was the model number for the Mercedes? MB1e. By this time the Road Roller had undergone a few more changes and was currently at model number MB1d, which explains why the new number ended with an ‘e’. However, some wonder why it was continued to be an MB1. When the vehicle changed completely, should not the model number also? From the beginning, Matchbox decided to limit the number of models produced in a year to 75. (This was the case until 2008 when it was increased to 100 cars.) In order to keep the vehicle line to 75 model or numbers, that means that they had to reuse the numbers 1 through 75. While the logic here is understandable, it created confusion since one model number over the decades, ended up representing multiple vehicles that had nothing in common.

When Matchbox was sold by Lesney Products to Universal Toys in 1982, the numbering system was re-evaluated. The numbering system posed problems, especially from manufacturing perspective. Universal changed the numbering system so that when a new vehicle was added, a new number was added to the MB# list. (They were well past MB600 as of 2002.) However, they made this change on the manufacturing side only. The customers continue to see cars numbered 1-75 (or 100). Another reason that Universal adopted a new numbering system was the fact that cars where produced for five different regions of the world. These regions were the Americas, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and the Rest of the World (aka ROW). The line of cars produced by each region was similar but naturally, there were many variances as well. This meant that even within one year’s production, there may have been up to five variations of any model number.

While the numbering system may only be of concern to collectors it has been updated to drastically reduce the possibility of variances among one model number. However, it still poses problems when collectors are seeking older vehicles since the model number they desire represents multiple vehicles. The year is very helpful in narrowing down to the specific vehicle in this situation, but be assured that some verification will be required when looking for a specific vehicle.

Baby Head Down and Labor

Baby head down means labor is coming, right? Many women when they hit the ninth month of pregnancy begin looking for any sign they can that labor will be coming, and coming soon. Once your baby is head down and engages in your pelvis, your body has begun getting ready for labor, but do not go getting the bubblegum cigars just yet. Just because your baby has engaged does not mean labor is going to happen that day, that week or even that month. Babies tend to turn head down around 33-34 weeks in most women. And most women go into labor between 38-42 weeks of pregnancy, which means there may be several more weeks of sporting a big belly ahead of you.

There are several factors that determine when and if your baby will drop before labor has begun, and those include:

Muscle tone – if you are a well toned woman, your stomach muscles may be working a little too efficiently. Keeping your baby up high and not allowing him/her to descend into your pelvis. Try to relax your stomach muscles to get things moving.

Number of babies – if you have given birth before, baby being head down but not engaged is very common up until the last few days before you give birth. It seems that women who have had previous children will drop and labor in a relatively short period of time of one another.

Size of the baby – if the baby is big he/she may not engage properly. Gestational diabetes is one of the main reasons for this.

Pelvic shape – having a smaller than normal pelvis may make it impossible for your baby to drop, even though baby is head down.

In summary, those who have had babies before, tend to not have their subsequent babies engage until labor is just about to begin. Those women who are first time moms however, may be walking around with a fully engaged baby for several weeks. It all depends on the mother’s body, the baby’s size and whether or not the baby is head down and ready to be born.

Birthday Party Entertainment – Three Danger Signs You Should Watch For!

Hiring birthday party entertainment is a big decision! A good entertainer can make a mediocre party seem extraordinary! A bad entertainer can bring down even the most well planned event.

Chances are you’re going to spend a fair amount of your budget on entertainment. Unfortunately, it can be hard to tell up front who’s a seasoned pro and who is trying to make a quick buck off unsuspecting parents!

Here are a few warning signs you should look out for when hiring a professional entertainer.

Lack of Response to Emails and Phone Calls
A true pro who makes their living off of entertainment is going to want your business. It’s reasonable to expect a response back to any inquiry within 24 hours. If your entertainer is out of the office they should note this on their voicemail and set an “Out of Office” response on their email.

Professional people behave in professional ways. No business professional in the real world would leave voicemails and emails unanswered for any length of time. It’s acceptable to expect that level of professionalism from your birthday party entertainment.

Bad Grammar / Text Message Speak in Emails
This should go without saying, but any written communication from your entertainer should be free of major grammar and spelling errors. Nobody’s perfect, but it should look like they at least attempted to use spell check before clicking send.

One of the worst offenses we’ve seen in recent years is “text message speak”. I actually saw the following in an email sent from an entertainer to a friend of mine planning their kids birthday party.

“LOLz! How RU? We gonna have G00d Timez at ur kidz PAR-TAY! ;-) ;P”

Emails don’t have to be Pulitzer Prize material, but they should at least be legible and professional.

No Formal Contrac
Every professional entertainer uses formal contracts. These protect both sides by clearly outlining what is or isn’t expected. If you see an entertainer working without a contract, it probably means they aren’t professionals.

Don’t be surprised when your entertainer requests a deposit at well. They aren’t trying to make your life intentionally difficult. Veteran entertainers tend to learn from experience quickly. You should see these as positive signs that you’re bringing on an entertainer with experience!

Astounding Facts on Weeds

Being an avid gardener, you can learn a lot of surprising facts about weeds. If your parents and grandparents are avid gardeners as well then you will learn even more. First, let’s define a weed because weeds are everything that isn’t pretty and that we don’t have a use for. Remember when you were child and was bringing pretty flowers to mom, only to be told that they are really weeds?

A weed is simply something growing where it isn’t wanted. By that definition a tomato plant can be a weed. On the other hand, if people were to educate themselves on the positives of some of these so called weeds, they might actually want them around. They would just like them to grow in a place intended just for them.

What many of us assume to be weeds in present day were often used by Native Americans and early settlers to America. Some of those uses included food for both people and animals, medicines, and dyes. Some of what we consider to be weeds are plants that are not native to our surrounding area or perhaps to our country. Many different plants were brought over to America because the immigrants had a use for them in the native land.

Some unlikely and some not so unlikely plants were used in past times for dyes. Perhaps the most commonly thought of for this purpose would be the Dandelion. Most obviously the yellow flowering portion of this plant and the roots as well can be used to produce a reddish color (we have all marked on our siblings faces with a Dandelion as kids). On the unlikely side, Poison Sumac was used for its red producing berries as well as pokeweed berries. Cattails were often used for browns as well as using the white fluff from the seeds to stuff toys and blankets.

Many so called weeds have medicinal properties. Dandelions, nettles and chickweeds are a few that are commonly used for urinary tract health. They are also used as healthier alternatives to diuretics because they won’t deplete your body of important minerals. There are many great websites and books at local libraries that can tell you which weeds are good to use as natural medicines.

Perhaps you have heard of Grandma having an afternoon cup of Dandelion Tea? Check by the leafy greens in your local supermarket. That’s right, they actually sell Dandelion greens. Chickweed tastes like spinach when cooked and is named as such because chickens love to eat it. What about those pesky burdocks? When you boil the root of the burdock it tastes similar to artichoke hearts, so much so that you can interchange it in any recipe. It has also been said that Burdock was the inspiration for the invention of Velcro.

Many weed seeds remain viable for many growing seasons. Which means they will likely be coming back to haunt you time and time again. The good thing is that as growers, we can study weeds and where they grow to tell what type of soil they are growing in. They can speak volumes about the abundant nutrients or the lack of them. It can also tell you if the soil is moist or dry, clay or sand and so on. An example would be that Bindweed grows in crusty surface soil with light sand. Another example would be that Plantains grow in extremely wet soil. Again, this information is easy to find online or at the local library.

One last piece of useless trivia to leave you with: Supporters of Presidential candidate, James Polk, wore the stems and leaves from the Pokeweed on their clothing to show their support for him. Certainly that has to be a surprising fact about weeds!

Jo is a writer for Japanese Knotweed Solutions, (http://www.jksl.com), experts in Japanese Knotweed elimination. If you are a devoted gardener, a home builder or a nature lover, sooner or later you will come upon this horrible weed. Japanese Knotweed is one of the most invasive species of weed, causing huge amounts of damage each year to homes, concrete structures, and rivers and streams.

Bad Behavior in Children – Is it Really Bad?

If you find that you are yelling and getting angry with your child more often than you would like, you may be looking at some ways to handle bad behavior in children. The first thing you need to keep in mind when you need to handle a behavior situation is that a child is a person. A child is a young adult that hasn’t grown up yet. They know more and feel more than we can ever realize. Just the atmosphere in a home that is not at a high level can affect the child in ways that we do not know about.

Is there really such a thing as bad behavior in children or is it really just misguided behavior that needs a quick correction? If we are going to label and behavior as bad then what is to stop the child from differentiating the label of bad behavior from bad child? There really are no bad children, and by using the word bad as often as we do, we may be putting a label on the child by association. Indeed children can do many things that can be very frustrating and tiresome, but in the end there are no bad children and let’s stop calling it bad behavior in children, especially in front of them.

If the child has a behavior habit that is not optimal such as screaming and yelling if he doesn’t get his way, then this is definitely a behavior that needs to be modified. The first thing to do when handling it is to sit down when the child is calm and discussing it with them. The worst mistake that a parent can make is to sit down and have a calm rational talk while the child is screaming. Let the child finish the screaming, it won’t kill you to listen to it one more time, and wait an hour or two until the child is very content doing something else and talk to him. This so-called bad behavior in children can usually be talked through.

If you are looking to correct bad behavior in children the first thing you need to do is stop calling it bad behavior. The next thing you need to do is really talk to your child and let him know what you think about this behavior. This needs to be done at a time following an incident.Remember never loose your temper take a big breath count to ten then give the child a hug.It may not work the first time but if you are patient it will work.In most cases the child is just looking for attention so give it to them.A hug will get you a lot farther than screaming and loosing your temper.

If you want further information about how to deal with the child and to really connect with him so that you can not only correct the misbehavior but build a relationship as well, you should go to http://bestsmartparentingtips.com/ for more answers.

Backaches While Pregnant

Backache while pregnant is the most common problem that pregnant women have, especially in the later months, and there are many causes, however there are things that you can do to lessen the pain so that you will be more comfortable. One of the main causes is the strain on your back muscles from carrying that extra weight. Another one is the posture women often assume during pregnancy to offset the weight. Stretched and weakened abdominal muscles are yet one more reason.

Here are some tips to help with your backache:

Sleep on a firm mattress. If your bed is too soft, have someone put a board between the mattress and box springs to make it firm. Sleep on your side rather than your back. Tuck a pillow between your legs.

Buy an abdominal support garment. It looks like a girdle and helps take the weight of your belly off your back muscles. Avoid lifting heavy objects. Heavy lifting puts even more strain on your back.

Don’t bend at the waist to pick something up, instead, squat down, bend your knees, and keep your back straight. Try to stay off your feet as much as possible. If you have to stand for a long time, rest one foot on a stool or a box to take the strain off your back.

Sit in chairs with good back support, or tuck a small pillow behind your lower back. Wear low-heeled shoes with good arch support. High heels tilt your body forward and strain your lower back muscles.

Keep things in reaching distance. Put things that you use a lot in close reach. This way you don’t have to bend or stretch. Apply a heating pad, and use the lowest setting, warm water bottle, or cold compress to ease the pain. Make sure and wrap it up in a towel to avoid burning yourself.

By following these simple suggestions, you will find that your backache while pregnant will be less painful, and you will be able to rest and get through your day more comfortably.

How to Prepare to Read Aloud

The key point is: If dads practice first before reading aloud to children, they can do a better job. Because their goal is to convince children to love reading, just like sellers need to know their products well in order to convince customers to buy them, they need to know the books they will read well in order to convince children of the joys of reading. So, if possible, dads should practice first.

To prepare, read the book to yourself silently. As you do, think about:

a. where in the book to use different voices, such as when different characters speak

b. where to speak softer or louder, such as when someone is whispering or shouting

c. where to add sound effects, such as when cows moo or bells ring

d. whether to skip any sections or pages, such as a long description that may be uninteresting

e. which words to emphasize, such as words with important meaning

f. whether to change any difficult words or spend time to explain them

g. where to stop and ask a question or make a connection to children’s lives

h. what sort of rhythm to use, especially when reading poetry

We don’t need to be a professional actor or a native speaker of the language used in the book to read aloud, but just like professional actors benefit from rehearsal, so can we. Plus, maybe our acting skills will increase as we do more reading aloud!

Another type of preparation is finding out about the authors of the books we are going to read aloud. Knowing about authors gives children and us insight into the book and helps children connect to other books by the same author. Libraries and the Internet can be a source of this information.

While preparation is useful, please do not feel that we always have to prepare before reading aloud. But, we should keep in mind all the points – a-h – above and be ready to think fast while we are reading. Besides, if we did not prepare ahead the first time, maybe the children will ask us to read the same book again. So, every time we read, we are also practicing. Indeed, working on our presentation skills is one way for adults to find something interesting when children ask for repeat reading of favorite books.

Read aloud time can be a special time in dad’s relationship with their kids. This time spent together can build an enduring bond.

Dr. George Jacobs, Ph.D., is the author of many books (including “The Read Aloud Guide”, textbooks for teachers and students, curriculum guides, and children’s storybooks).

Valentine’s Day: 12 Tips to Make it the Best Yet

  • Ask your partner what would make a perfect day for him or her. To whatever extent possible, create that day.
  • Create a scrapbook or collage of your first date. Include pictures, ticket stubs and memories of that time together.
  • Talk about the times the two of you felt closest. Then pick two or three things from that time that you can do again.
  • Find out about your partner’s dreams. How? Just ask. These dreams can be from the present or from childhood, small or large. Then see how many you can fulfill.
  • Write a love note to your partner. You could write about what first attracted you to your partner and what still attracts you now; you could apologize for something or anticipate something in the future.
  • If you like to travel, choose a place your partner would like to visit but is not within your budget (Italy, perhaps). Then go the video store and rent travel movies and/or movies set in Italy. Cook Italian food and make it Italian night in your house.
  • Ask your partner this: “What does love look like to you?” The answer can give you the beginning of a map to guide you in expressing your love.
  • If you’re currently doing anything in the relationship that is not working, remember the first rule of ruts: Stop digging. Find something, almost anything, to do differently to get out of the rut.
  • For one week, take over a household task that your love dislikes.

  • Give a treasure-hunt gift , Whatever gift you get for your partner, make a game out of finding it. Leave a card with a note ‘?suggesting he or she look some-” where for the next clue. Thenn ink that place leave another note about where to find the next clue, and the next one, etc., leading up to where you have hidden the gift. Use your imagination.
  • Record a CD of music. Include favorite songs as well as songs that express your feelings for your partner.
  • If at all possible, take a day off or use a weekend day just to play. Play games, go to a park and swing, fly kites, blow bubbles – whatever you enjoyed as a child. It can be really romantic, as well as a great stress-reliever.
