Growing Herbs in Pots – Convenience Plus

Growing herbs in pots… super convenient if you love using them for homeopathic reasons, or just to enhance the taste and aroma of foods.

It may be time for you to consider growing herbs in pots, right inside the kitchen door or better still, inside the kitchen.

You can legally and easily grow herbs in a garden or even on a windowsill inside your kitchen. Herbs can be grown in a pot, and though they are slightly different than plants grown in a container, they can still come out fresh and ready to use.

The first thing you should know about plants in pots is that they should be situated in front of a window so they can have easy access to sunlight… fluorescent lighting can be used in some cases.

Make sure that you situate the pots according to how much sunlight each one needs.

For example, herbs like basil and rosemary need full sunlight. However, lemon balm and parsley grow best when given a bit of shade. Meanwhile, ginger and mint can grow in full shade.

Gardeners who like growing herbs in pots are advised to use deep pots of 6-12 inches deep (10 inches is a good average to work by).

You can get larger containers if you want to put several herbs in one spot, but when it comes to individual pots, you have to provide enough space so the root system has room to grow.

Amend the soil you plan on using.

Remember that herbs will grow best in aerated and alkaline based soil. Proper drainage is important so make sure there are holes on the pots to keep the soil dry.

It is best to soak herbs in water before you begin.

After watering them, you let them dry for a period of 2-3 days. Soak them again and make sure they don’t wilt from too much sunlight. Some herbs will dry (and eventually wilt) quickly so you may have to water these herbs every day.

If you are growing herbs in pots then you will have to water them slightly more often. Clay pots tend to dry quickly when compared to plastic or wooden materials. Also remember that the smaller the pot, the more water you need.

There are advantages to growing herbs in pots, even some over planting them in the ground. You get to plant more densely when you use a container. You can keep a close eye on them and keep them within a convenient reach.

They are also close to the kitchen (or in the kitchen) for fresh picking and easy use.

You may have to tender the plant once in a while or check the drainage, but for the most part, it’s just like having a miniature garden in your home.

Growing your own herbal plants can save you money, provide better quality ingredients and bring you a lot of joy.

Imagine being able to grow your own rosemary, thyme or ginger! If you have ever stocked up on certain ingredients for the season, or have ever experienced frustration because the supermarket was out of your favorite herb, then growing herbs in pots may be the ideal solution.

Basil – The King of Any Italian Herb Garden

One of the most delicious enjoyments of life are herbs. In addition to bring forward good looks to your garden they make meals flavor better and afford a nice fragrance to the air we breathe. In George Washington’s days each home had an herb garden that they used for cook, infusions and therapeutic intentions. The practice of herb gardening is gradually coming back.

An Italian herb garden is one of the most successful cooking gardens. Any person that has a sunny plot of land or a windowsill can cultivate these herbs like parsley, garlic, basil, rosemary, sweet marjoram, fennel, sage, leaf celery and oregano among others. A small garden plot can, without doubt, provide all the herbs that you will need for luscious Italian dishes. They are also effortless to cultivate in a sunny window or terrace for your year-round use.

Ocimum basilicum, usually named sweet basil, is one of the largest famous herbs.Frequently called the ‘king of herbs,’ basil can be cultivated inside the house or outdoors.?/p>

Basil seeds itself so effortlessly that you possibly will never have to purchase a new plant after the first year. There exist a lot of diverse kinds of basil, but all grow quickly. Do not allow basil flourish, or it will go to seed and will grow tall and leggy; to prevent that needs constant pinching back the plants tops and they will grow into compact little bushes.

The leaves of Sweet basil are inch-long, oval-pointed, dark green and have a clove-pepperish perfume and flavor.Sweet basil makes an attractive, luxuriant little plant, growing outdoors or more inside the house.A purple-leafed variety, ‘Dark Opal’ is decorative, affords an adorably indoor plant, and is equally valuable in cuisine.?/p>

Basil is a yearly herb and grows 12 – 24 inches (30 – 60 cm) as the height varies according to the type. When the plants have overtaken about 6-8 inches tall, you can start harvesting. Cut off the top 1/3 of the plant, just above a leaf intersection. Five to eight plants will afford sufficient amount of basil for the whole neighborhood.

Farming necessities for cultivating basil are: full sun, light, a soil with good drainage, rich in nutrients and a little acid; constant watering (don’t overflow); basil will not endure cold and do not forget cut off flower stems for a longer period of leaf production.

Basil can be started from seed or can be moved inside the house at the end of the growing period. If you are bringing basil inside the house, select the strongest plants.Sooner than the first frost, tear off them out of the garden and place them in pots or containers filled with fresh soil.Basil can also be cultivated in pots outside and treated the same way when bringing them inside for winter.Verify for bugs and if there is a pest, sprinkle with a soap and water spray.Progressively reverse the hardening off process by avoiding the containers or pots to be exposed to direct sunlight for approximately a week. The herbs will suit familiarized to the less amount of light they will obtain inside the house.Carry them inside the house or balcony and afford the conditions they need to keep on growing.

To stay lusty and flavorful, basil needs at least five hours of lusty sunlight a day.If you are cultivating basil on the windowsill or terrace, rotate pots frequently to be sure each side gets enough light. Basil leaves must not come into contact with the cold glass.Basil grows although better under fluorescent lights in the winter.Hang the lights 6 inches (15 cm) above plants and leave lights on for 14 hours a day.

In the backyard, basil can be cultivated with vegetables as it is effective to prevent both, bugs and pests.Basil also repels flies and mosquitoes. In the meals, use basil in tomato dishes (both raw and cooked), pesto, sauces, salad dressings, soups, mushroom dishes, mixed with other herbs, omelettes, pasta dishes, vegetables such as eggplant, squash, and zucchini.Use fresh leaves in salads and you also can add fresh leaves to vinegar and extra virgin olive oil.Basil can be used fresh, frozen, or dried.Use basil with discretion, as it is one of the few herbs that enhance in spice when heated.

Valentine-Myth Or Martyr and Does it Matter?

The myths surrounding the most romantic day in the calendar are many and varied. Modern day origins date back to 496AD when Pope Gelasius decided he was not entirely happy with the festival of Lupercalia, an ancient Roman diety dating back to before 44BC. It was a festival of purification and fertility involving vestal virgins and naked young men, the pre-cursor for modern day swinger parties. Pope Gelasius became distressed that the people were celebrating an immoral pagan ritual. Something had to change and he chose Valentine as the patron saint of lovers. Unfortunately the identity of the real Saint is not known with three saints being linked to February 14th. One is described as a priest in Rome, another as a Bishop of Interamna, now Terni in Italy, and the other seemingly lived and died in Africa.

That being said, does it really matter? Does anyone really know or care about the origin of anything we celebrate in our modern world?

Ask most people in the street and they will struggle to explain why we celebrate many of our holidays. Saint Nicholas for example, where did that come from and how did it turn into the extraordinary holiday that we know as Christmas? What is the link between Santa Claus, Jesus and the 25th of December? There is no great link. All of the traditions merely blend into each other on one day. It is widely accepted that Jesus was born somewhere between March and May and that the church moved the date to correspond with the winter solstice, which in ancient times was marked on December 25th. Santa Claus was nothing more than a mythological figure associated with bringing gifts to children but again does it really matter in today’s society?

We have lost the reasoning behind why all of us celebrate these holidays but that seems incidental when considering what both dates bring to us all. Christmas is a special day and has outgrown its humble beginnings to become society’s most enduring date with millions spending millions each year.

Valentines day though has become an extraordinary date in our annual celebrations. Its traditions mean very little to anyone including the church. It has grown to become the most important date after Christmas day for sending cards and reaching out to people, some of them we have never even spoken to. So why should it become so?

Valentines offers people an excuse to be romantic for the day as if it were not allowed at any other time throughout the year. It offers hope to those desperate to find something they cannot seem able to find in those other 364 days of the year. There is also the tradition from the first days at school where we are encouraged to make our cards and post them in a class made post box to members of the class we share.

If you were to ask your grandmother what Valentines meant then the answer would be most different to the answer you’d receive from asking your mother. Your opinion too will differ from each generation before because each of us have different memories about what the day meant to us.

It can be the smallest card from a secret admirer or a single rose left on a pillow from a loved one who has shared your life for years. No matter the gesture, it means something more on that one day than at any other time of the year.

To some it can be easier to forgive the forgotten birthday than it is to forgive the forgotten Valentine. Society brands the forgotten Valentine a monster who has dared to flaunt disregard at the tradition. Even modern day speed of life is no argument against not presenting a partner with a gift emblazoned with a red heart of some kind. The heart symbol itself was an early representation of what people thought one might actually look like. One of the most enduring and well known symbols of our society nothing more than a guess at the shape of one of our body’s most important organs.

It is a strange statistic that 85 percent of all Valentine cards are purchased by women. Why is that women feel more compelled to mark the day than men? Women expect men to be romantic, to show the gestures associated with society’s expectations and most men follow through on this purely to fend off the backlash for not remembering. Most men would of course argue against this unless asked by another man.

Valentines day is a strangely popular celebration of what we should all be feeling every day of the year. The expectation is that we go out of our way to prove it even more on the 14th of February than we would on the 13th or 15th.

Advice for men-make the effort on this one day in Winter and it can see you forgiven a multitude of minor sins for a month after. Anything in the shape of a heart will suffice but fill it with chocolate and you’ve just reached gold medal status.

Advice for women-don’t expect the world from your man when he is the most loving individual every other day of the year. If your man needs to wait for that one day in the year when everyone else makes a special effort then you need not wait around for your man.

I have no doubt that Valentines day will remain one of our most popular celebrations of the year for many years to come. The media and gift card industry will not allow it to slip from our consciousness now that they have a hold of it. This more than anything is what makes February 14th a false holiday in so much that it no longer means what it should.

We no longer write our individual cards emblazoned with lace and calligraphy nor take that long walk in the woods with no expectation of sexual gratification. The real meaning of Valentines is long forgotten and will never return but we can all take a small step back and send one of the most unexpected gifts our partners will ever experience.

Hand write your feelings on a piece of paper and see how it is welcomed more than a shiny red heart adorned mass produced card.

It will indeed be a Happy Valentines day.

Baby Video Monitors – What Parents Should Know

From the time parents get to know the news of a bundle of joy about to arrive they are anxious about its well being. A baby heart monitor helps parents keep track of their baby’s heartbeat and gives them a reassurance of its well being. Once the baby is born, parents are worried about their child’s every move. Of course it is not possible to continuously keep watch over a toddler or baby’s activities since several other chores have to be dealt with. This is where baby monitors play an important role. Baby video monitors give parents a chance to keep an eye on their baby while they are busy with other chores or even while sleeping.

There are several models of baby monitors available in the market. They come in different styles with different features. Some monitors have to be fixed permanently in one place while others have portable monitors which can be propped up on tables or nightstands or clipped onto a belt or chain. Some systems have hand held receivers which look like mobile phones. Most monitors allow you to tilt, zoom and pan a view of the room so that you have a clear idea of what your baby is doing. If you need to keep track of more than one child at a time, you can find monitors with multiple camera set ups. Some systems have two monitors so that both parents can keep watch over their children. If your home is large, you will need monitors that offer wider reception.

Baby monitors come with bells and whistles like soothing music and lullabies, vibration, motion sensors, night lights and so on. Baby monitor reviews available over the internet will give you an idea on which one is the best baby monitor for you. Graco iMonitor, Summer Infant Two-Room Scanning Video Baby Monitor, MobiCam Color Video Baby Monitor, Fisher Price Sound and Lights Baby Monitor, Philips Baby Monitor with DECT Technology etc are some of the best baby monitors in the market.

How to Use Herbs to Grow Even More Herb Plants

So now you have a beautiful herb garden but you do not have enough herbs of each kind. There are many techniques to reproduce your plants and if you didn’t know, you can use herbs for growing even more plants. In this article you can learn easy ways of growing herbs and making more plants. But hey, relax! Using herbs for growing more plants is not rocket science. You just need to have lots of dedication and patience.

Grafting

Grafting is one of the major techniques for reproduction and coupling of plants and fruits. In grafting all you need is your herbs to help them reproduce. Imagine that you have a rosemary plant that has a rare type of flower and you want to have more plants with the same kind of flower. You can reproduce the same kind of plant with grafting.

In grafting, the root of an herb is the stock and the stem is the scion. So, you take a stock of any regular rosemary (or other plant you wish to graft), dig a hole on the soil and put the scion on top of the stock. The hormones in both plants will help the plant heal and the scion will be attached to the stock. Repeat this step as many times as you want to achieve the desired results.

Stem cutting

One quick and easy way to make more plants while growing your herbs in a garden is stem cutting. First understand that a plant can generate roots or stems if properly treated. Say that you have a small garden but not enough cilantro plants. Simply take the cilantro, cut the stem and replant it directly to the soil.
When you cut the stem you must plant the herb on the soil right away. If you do not plant the herb, the herb will simply die. This process is caused by plant growth hormones called auxins. These growth hormones make the plant grow roots when placed in firm soil. To increase the chances for the cutting to work, cut pieces of plants that are growing steadily and avoid using pieces of plants that are blooming.

Layering

Layering is when you cut down a new plant from the parent plant. With layering you can use herbs for growing more plants. Have you noticed that when plants are matured sometimes they have little plants growing from them? Those small plants growing from your herbs are called stolons. To reproduce plants simple detach the stolon from the parent plant and plant the stolon in fresh soil. Plant the stolon with the side of the wounded part inside the soil. If you do not do this, your plant will not make roots. Bury the plant (do not cut the plant) allow the stem to be six to twelve inches above the soil.

Growing herbs in garden exteriors or pots will be easy if you follow these simple steps. Herbs have a high tendency to reproduce and heal themselves. Simple techniques like grafting, or stem cutting will help you have a garden with plenty plants and herbs. Using herbs for growing more plants out of them can also help you save money if you are growing kitchen herbs. If you use grafting and stem cutting to make more plants you can have the number of plants that you want and you can also reproduce the best traits of each plant.

Changing Times Means More Eco-Friendly Diaper Bags

Think back to the last time you changed your shower curtain, or even your hairstyle. Chances are when thinking about how many times we change aspects of our own lives you’ll find that many times we change and don’t even realize it.

Recently, I changed what my family was eating. I did so not because I was feeling poorly or thought that my children were becoming obese. I changed what we were eating, how much we were eating, and how I was preparing our meals because of all the healthy living hype we hear so much about in the news, on the internet, and in things that we read in newspapers and magazines.

Changes within our lives don’t always happen because we feel some underlying drive to be better citizens, healthier individuals, or even because we have some inspiration to save our environment in every fiber of our being. Changes many times arise because the thoughts of becoming more environmentally friendly or living healthier lifestyles come about because someone has planted the thought into our brains. As an influenced individual these hidden hints have changed how I live my life dramatically.

Manufactures have jumped onto the bandwagon of making more environmentally friendly products mainly because more and more consumers are becoming better aware of their surroundings. More Americans have realized the state our environment is currently in, but more importantly we are realizing that if we continue to use the products we are currently using our already serious problem will lead to the destruction of the world, as we know it.

Baby manufactures have jumped onto the eco-friendly bandwagon too! As we’ve seen over the past few years, consumers have steered away from purchasing the ‘traditional style’ items and are purchasing more modern looks to better suit their family’s style.

Manufacturers are changing the styles, colors, and materials of the baby products being made. Diaper bags are among one of my favorite changing items. This may be because as a young modern mother, a pastel diaper bag was the only option for me a few years ago. Nearly 7 years later brightly colored fabrics with trendy prints are the new hot item.

On the top of my favorite list are new eco-friendly diaper bags that are both up-to-date and affordable! Eco-friendly bags are being manufactured in varied colors, prints, and styles to fit anyone’s needs, even dads! These modern new diaper bags are made up of recycled water bottles. This means that every bag is keeping 3 to 5 bottles out of the landfill!

Change occurs sometimes because we have an inner drive pushing us to change, or possibly change occurs because someone or something implies that the change is good for one reason or another. Changing towards a more environmentally friendly world is one of the best changes you can make!

My Baby Diaper Bag has been eco-friendly from the start. It is important to me to help out the environment any way that I can. As long as I am doing my part my stylish diaper bag can also be green.

Food Party Planning – Delight Your Guests With a Tasteful Experience

Looking back to centuries ago, the hostess with the mostess always had great parties. The reason for this is because there was always dishes of extravagant food available at their parties. They planned their parties with the intention of keeping their guests happy and the one way to ensure everyone remains happy at your party is to do as they did and that is to serve great food.

The proper way to go about your food party planning is to make your menu plans in advance. The best way to begin is to create a food party checklist. By doing this you will have an easy way to track all of your food items. Whether it be the items you need to shop for or the things you may already have in your refrigerator. Regardless of where they may be located, write everything down, including the cost. The cost issue is an important aspect of any checklist. By keeping track you will have a useful tool in maintaining your budget.

The budget in your food party planning must be kept up to date. There are other things you will need to purchase besides food to make the party right. A few of the items are, decorations (i.e. flowers, etc.), beverages, venue choice (whether it’s cleaning material for home or a banquet hall or some other outside choice), and possibly entertainment.

The size of the guest list also plays a large role in your food party planning. If you are only serving a small group the quality of the food may or may not improve depending on the size of your budget. What this means is you may be able to serve expensive food for only a few people, but the larger group will have to be served something less. Just because your budget won’t allow for extravagant dishes for a large group doesn’t mean you can’t serve something delicious. There are plenty of great food dishes that can be prepared cheaply.

These are just a few of the things to consider when planning your food party. There are other important things to plan for when trying to create a successful party and by reading what follows you will get an idea as to what they entail.

When planning your menu be sure to inquire about the dietary needs of your guests. By doing this you will avoid any embarrassing mishaps. An example is serving steak to a vegetarian. Of course you wouldn’t want this to happen. So be sure to inquire. You don’t want to spend hours preparing your famous pork dish only to find out two of your guests are Muslim. Be smart and ask the invited guests what their preferences are.

Always try and prepare as much food before the party as possible. You don’t want to spend any more time than you have to in the kitchen. By getting things done a day or two in advance you will have more time to spend with your guests. The best parties are the ones where the host/hostess is a lively entertainer. By trying your best in this arena you will have an edge in keeping your guests happy no matter what you serve.

IVF Counseling Can Be Both Educational and Beneficial

Couples who have trouble conceiving often face mountains of stress. In some cases, this may affect their relationship and can be emotionally draining for some people. Furthermore, with piles of information being thrown at them, understanding infertility treatments and procedures such as in vitro fertilization, or IVF, can be exhausting. For this reason, many clinics offer IVF counseling to help their patients understand the treatment. Some clinics also offer emotional support for couples struggling with infertility.

Each clinic may differ in the type and scope of IVF counseling offered. Some clinics may not offer it at all, so it is important for couples interested in this procedure and the counseling service to speak to a medical professional at a clinic in their area. This will help them determine if the clinic offers this service and will provide them with more information about the service if it is offered. These counseling services may offer support to couples trying to cope with the stress and emotion that infertility may bring to couples. It also can help patients as they go through the in vitro fertilization process so that they understand what each new phase involves.

In short, the IVF process combines the woman’s eggs with the man’s sperm in a sterilized glass dish in a laboratory. The woman may be required to take drugs to stimulate her ovaries to produce several mature eggs. When the time is right, the eggs are extracted from the woman for fertilization in the lab. The eggs are left to be fertilized in the dish which contains a nutrient medium. It may then be placed in an incubator for roughly 48 hours before the embryos are placed in the woman’s uterus. In most cases, only a couple of embryos are used to avoid multiple births. The rest may be frozen for use at a later date.
The success rate of in vitro fertilization will vary depending on the couple’s unique case. Older women may face a lower success rate, while younger women may be more successful. In addition, the success rate for IVF differs on the clinic selected for treatment, but typically ranges between 10% to 38%. However, individual clinics may be higher.

Couples interested in IVF counseling will find more information from a medical professional at a clinic in their area that offers in vitro fertilization and a counseling service. These services have helped other couples manage their infertility problems and have been instrumental in providing information about the IVF procedure and what couples should expect before, during and after the procedure.

Justin, a writer in the health field, suggests you visit Boston IVF due to them being regarded as one of the best in ivf counseling probably due to having some of the top fertility doctors from Harvard Medical School. Learn how infertility treatment can help families achieve dreams.
