Holiday Office Party Games to Liven Up the Crowd

Holiday office party games can take on many different forms. If your office group is small, your party can either take place at the office, a restaurant, or in of the employee’s homes. Party games can be the old favorites involving cards or board games, but they can also include games made up that are connected with the work that you do. Games that follow the same idea as bingo can work very well, but the card is adapted to categories that would be found in your particular field of work.

Memory games are other holiday office party ideas often enjoyed by staff. Competition games work well in offices where workers put things together or assemble things. An example of this might be a group of people that assemble furniture. The game would consist of giving them several pieces of furniture from different items, and then they would have to sort out what the specific pieces of furniture that go together and then choose one to assemble. This can be timed with a stop watch or be done at the same time others are doing it to see who is fastest and who completes the job properly.

This type of game works well for restaurant workers, either for kitchen staff or front of the house staff. Anything from opening and serving a bottle of wine, to being able to tell the beer that you are serving from their color and scent can work well when putting together such a competition. Menu competitions and what goes into some of the more complicated dishes, to what beverages are served and the price of each item can be fun especially with a prize at the end to sweeten the contest. This may sound odd to some, but people enjoy playing games connected with things that they are knowledgeable about.

Games are not meant to be so complicated that it takes the fun out of the event. These games can also be played in teams. You might have definitions written on paper that you or a team may need to find the right category for.

Garden Lights – Alternative Energy Options

Basic Alternative Options

Your garden lighting doesn’t always have to run on electricity. You might want to try using candles, flares, torches, or lanterns, although many of these options tend to work best around seating areas. For the rest of your garden, you may want to try solar lighting, which is covered below.

You can set up these types of portable lighting anywhere, but wind can be a problem, especially when it starts to blow smoke in people’s faces. Many candles and flares release pleasant scents, which can add greatly to the ambiance of the mood you’re trying to create for your guests or even for yourself. You can also get scents or oils with chemical repellents that will deter insects (especially mosquitoes) that are attracted by the light. Here are some options for non-electrical lighting:

昄anterns, lit either by candle or oil, can be hung around the garden to give a gentle, golden light.
旻lares or torches resemble large candles. They are often on sticks (short or tall) that can be stuck into the ground. They’ll burn for 6 to 8 hours and cast a warm, romantic glow all around.
旵andles, while they don’t provide a great deal of light, create a magnificent atmosphere with their gentle flickering. Protect the flame so that it doesn’t blow out and so that no one gets burnt or gets smoke in their face.

Solar Lighting

Solar garden lights are constantly improving. They may be a great option for you to use in your garden. There are more and more options for battery and solar-powered lighting equipment for garden use, which is especially useful if you have a garden where it’s difficult to provide a cable power supply.

You can buy single, stand-alone solar-powered units mounted on a spike that you can simply push into the ground wherever you want. They’ve got a small integrated solar panel that collects and stores energy during the day. They can be turned on manually at night, or many even have a light sensor that will turn them on automatically when it gets dark and off when it gets light again. You could even set up a cluster of lights that are all linked to a single large solar panel, but remember that this option would also require cables and wiring.

Solar-powered lights have a lot of great “green-energy” qualities, but they also have drawbacks. Solar lights work best in bright, sunny locations where plenty of sun light is available for energy storage. Yes, solar panels are definitely becoming more and more efficient as years go by, but their storage life is still limited. The sensors and circuitry within the panels are also delicate and easily damaged, so you’ll need to handle them with care. In the proper location, solar lights are ideal for lighting remote paths. And they’re great if you have children, because there is no risk of electrocution.

How Can I Help My Children Enjoy Reading?

Reading has always been a difficult chore for me. I call it a chore because when I was young and in school it was one of the hardest thing I ever had to do. I would do anything I could to get away from reading.

Most of the time the subject matter of the books offered in class held no interest to me so I had little interest in reading. I mean, after all, how long can you find joy in watching Spot run? And I didn’t even know Jane or Dick. Why would I want to read about them?

I also suffered a little dyslexia and the jumbled up letters of each word were sometimes a little hard to make sense of. I would need to read some words several times before it made sense. Sometimes I had to read the entire sentence over and over.

Back then, those many years ago, the teachers didn’t have the time or patience to work with each student and they never knew the problems faced by slow readers.

Today I am still bothered by my inability to read correctly. I still find myself rereading words and sometimes even missing words completely. By missing a word or two the whole paragraph is lost or it may take on a wrongful meaning. The need to reread the paragraph is still there.

I have tried some of the reading remedies but it is too late. the damage is already done. Even though I write articles like this and I read a lot of information over the Internet I still find a difficulty in reading.

My disbelief in reading was set in my mind as a very young child. I wish I had developed an interest in reading while I was still young.

What I’m saying in these few word is simply when you see your child struggling over a book don’t just turn away and think that a teacher will take care of it. Each teacher has 20 or more students in the class and may not be able to give the attention needed.

Take an interest in your child’s ability to read. Show him or her that reading can be fun. Read with them. If you read with the child and throw in a giggle or laugh now and then the chore becomes more exciting, fun and desirable.

Like I said before, who wants to watch Spot run? Give the kids something that they like. Something like Hannah Montana or “The Lord Of The Rings” Books they find exciting and interesting. Give them books that were designed for the younger generation.

There is a whole series of Harry Potter books that would be ideal for helping your child enjoy reading. In fact, J.K. Rowlings, the author of the Harry Potter series has written a new book titled “The Tales of Beedle The Bard” Which again, was written with children in mind.

Get a copy of that one and sit down with your children to discover something new. Something no one else has seen.

I wrote this article because all my life I struggled with my own limited reading capabilities. I have missed out on so many exciting and wonderful adventures only gained through reading. At the ripe old age of 68 I still struggle. Don’t let it happen to your children. Give them all the help you can.

I’m sure there are others in your location who would like to help their children learn to enjoy reading. Why not do them a favor and pass this along.

Extracurriculars for Elementary School Children – 10 Tips for Negotiating the Activity Maze

Just when you’ve bought the last, hard-to-find school supply, they arrive on your desk: the kids’ extracurricular activity forms.

Soccer, dance, tennis, piano, karate – the options can make a mom or dad’s head spin. What should you choose? And how can you keep the kids active without overbooking them or driving yourself crazy?

Below are tips to help elementary school parents navigate the activity maze gleaned from my experience with my girls, ages 7 and 9:

*Observe a class. If children are jumping on the trampoline at the gymnastics studio without supervision you’ll want to pass. Check the age of instructors and ask about their training. Are they chatting among themselves or interacting with students?

*Drill the coach. When and where games are held? What equipment is required? What’s the teacher’s philosophy? Some dance studios focus on grooming prima ballerinas. Others bring out the dancer in every child. Some let you observe while others do not. Find out what you’re getting into.

*Get the dirt. Families who’ve participated in the activity are your best source for the real scoop. Do parents yell at their kids during games? Is the coach a mensch or a monster? Do all the children play or just the stars?

*Consider your kid. Some children can manage lots of activities. Others need extra downtime. While many of her friends did after-school activities in kindergarten, my younger daughter came home and rested.

*Consider yourself. Jumping out of bed on Saturday morning to race to a hot soccer field is my idea of hell. So I head off soccer requests with glowing descriptions of activities whose schedules suit me better, like basketball. I’m not sure how much longer I can psych the girls out, but so far, so good.

*Retain flexibility. This fall my girls will ride on Saturdays at a stable that lets you pay as you go. This will leave us open to attend the farmer’s market and local festivals, which have great events for kids.

*Use a soft sell. Sometimes you want your child to try something. Don’t tell her that! My younger daughter had agreed to take piano – until my husband insisted on it. Then she refused. I had to persuade her all over again by describing piano’s benefits.

*Set limits. One sport per season per child is a reasonable guideline. Schoolwork comes first. I sign up for less in the fall than in the spring so I can see how school is going before my kids take on many extracurricular activities. At times you need to say no to something your child wants to do.

*Negotiate. Instructors eager to fill classes will sometimes comply with special requests regarding scheduling. Anyway, you’ll never know unless you ask.

*Join the fun. It can get tedious sitting in the stands. Some parents take lessons with their children. After spending a year in the dance waiting room, I’ve found it much more fun to ice skate with my girls. Recently, I even bought figure skates!

How to Have a Boy Baby – Natural Gender Selection Methods

Determining gender of baby pre-conception has been something people have been trying since the dawn of time. In the past, the techniques to accomplish choosing a boy or girl child involved a lot of guesswork, some old wives tales, and maybe a tiny bit of science. There were foods to conceive a boy, positions to conceive a girl, exercises to do and elixirs to drink. Right or wrong, these methods were hard to prove effective… or even ineffective. Under normal circumstances you have a 50/50 chance of producing the desired sex anyway, so unless you the same methodology is closely followed and that data is gathered over a longer period of time – there’s just no way of knowing which gender selection pregnancy techniques worked best. Until now.

The tips and tricks below will teach you how to have a boy baby. They’ve been gathered and compiled together using carefully plotted research over a period of many years. With just a few modifications to your diet, exercise, and sexual routine, you can determine gender of baby each time, every time. Here are just some of the techniques you should be using in order to have that son you’ve always wanted:

* The Shettles Method – One that that’s been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt: male sperm (y-sperm) travel faster than female sperm (x-sperm). It’s also been noted that the x-chromosomed sperm die out faster than the female ones, which live longer and tend to have more endurance. Taking this into account, the shorter the distance that needs to be traveled to reach the egg – the MUCH greater your chances are of having a male child. As the distance gets further, your chances of conceiving a girl are greatly increased.

Where does this all apply in how to have a boy baby? The answer is simple: the closer you have intercourse to your exact ovulation date, the better your chances of having a male child. Try to plan as much sex as possible on or about the date of ovulation (usually 1 day before or after). The Shettles technique recommends having sex as early as 24 hours before ovulation up to and including no more than 12 hours past the predicted time you ovulated in order to greatly increase your chances of conceiving a boy.

* Foods to Conceive a Boy – Bananas! Salty foods, dairy products, and bananas are all said to help gender selection boy efforts. Eating more calories than normal can do it also, and it’s been shown that women who are getting a full supply of all necessary nutrients tend to create more male babies. Be sure to be taking the best prenatal vitamins.

* Caffeine – Right before intercourse, the male partner should drink 1 to 2 cups of caffeinated coffee or a similar beverage. This gives a supercharged boost to the already fast x-sperm, increasing chances for a male-favored conception.

* Adjust Your pH Level – Making sure you have the proper pH levels in your reproductive tract is one of the most important ways to choose the sex of baby. An acidic pH will tend to destroy sperm, with the x-sperm dying off more quickly (remember – they’re faster but not stronger than y-sperm!). This leaves the unwanted condition of higher levels of y-sperm in a man’s semen. So when trying to conceive a baby boy, make certain you’re promoting an alkaline environment by not eating a lot of spicy or acidic foods.

* Boxers or Briefs? – If you’re looking to create a son instead of a daughter, your best bet is boxer shorts. The further from the body the testicles are allowed to hang, the more regulated the temperature of a man’s semen. Keep them in close to the body, as in the case of briefs, and many sperm will die from the higher temperature levels. And since the male sperm die faster than female sperm, this hurts your chances of having a boy.

* Sexual Positioning – Once again, the speed of the individual x and y sperm plays a factor here. The closer the male can deposit semen to the woman’s cervix, the better the chances of an x-sperm reaching the egg first. Therefore, choose positions to conceive a boy during intercourse that allow for the deepest possible penetration. It’s been suggested that the ‘doggie-style’ position is one of the best ways to accomplish this.

* Orgasms During Sex – It’s been proven that if the female partner accomplishes orgasm during sex, two things happen: one, the contractions help move the sperm upward and into the cervix. Two, the endorphins released into the body during orgasm create a more alkaline environment, which we already know is better for male sperm. When trying for a boy, keep this in mind!

Unique Baby Shower Ideas – Baby Showers at Work!

I have to be honest, I’m never SUPER excited to get that invitation to a baby shower in the mail. I actually usually have a lot more fun than I anticipate having, although I still try to avoid those baby-shower games whenever I can. The exception, of course, is the “baby shower at work”. Because of course anyone would rather eat cake and gossip and talk about new babies than actually work!

The problem with those work baby showers is that it’s tough to throw them, in the conference room or some set-aside meeting space, and have them look any different or more special than a boring conference room. Luckily, there’s some decorating ideas that are not only cute and stylish, but practical!

One of the best ones is a diaper cake centerpiece. These look like tiered cakes, complete with stuffed animal decorations-but are made of itty-bitty, perfect for new baby, diapers that mom can use! Baby diaper cakes have actually been around for a while, but they are getting much cuter and more stylish and you can get them, reasonably priced, with lots of cute add-ons that make them the perfect for the focal point of the party. If you know boy or girl, you can choose the “sex” of your diaper cake centerpiece; if it’s a surprise, you can get gender neutral versions, still with cute animals or toys as add-ons-try a search for “baby shower diaper cakes” and you’ll have lots of options.

Another cute d閏or idea: stringing a clothes line across the back of the conference room, and having everyone bring baby clothes gifts. You can get colorful clothes pins and pin the outfits across the clothes line-festive, cute, and functional all at once, and EVERYONE likes shopping for baby clothes! If there’s no room to string a clothes line, you can use this same concept by filling a diaper bucket with a clothes line with newborn clothes, bibs, etc pinned to it; pulling the line out of the diaper bucket (or hamper) is fun when it’s loaded with goodies, and this is a good way to make a cute gift presentation in a small space (plus helps mom get everything home easily!)

A final good “work shower” idea is to have everyone bring in favorite books for the new baby; this is a wonderful way to help build the baby’s library with a diverse selection of books mom or dad might never have read and kept as favorites, from childhood. Buying books is fairly economical, so especially if the shower is for a co-worker, may be easier than some other, more personal items (for instance, work colleagues shouldn’t be expected to provide breast pumps, dress shields, etc!) Some of my children’s favorite books came from a little baby girl gift basket I received, stuffed with a selection of books for girls specifically, and I’m a firm believer that you can never have TOO many books.

Top Tips For Quick Toilet Training

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts, toddlers have profound and steadfast cravings to discover new information, observe their environments, and master new skills. And it’s no surprise that when children are actively encouraged to seek out new information and their efforts and accomplishments are celebrated, they learn far more quickly.

Therefore, if your goal is to toilet train your son or daughter quickly, you must keep these fundamental truths in mind before beginning the process, because they serve as the basis for any good fast-forwarding system. In my experience, far too many well-meaning parents has less than stellar results because they assume that their little ones actually prefer peeing and pooping in their diapers! This couldn’t be further from the truth! Rather, children continually strive to become more independent (and potty training is one of the biggest first steps towards this) and with proper instruction and support, they can – and will – learn to use the potty or toilet quickly and happily!

All you need is four things:

1. The right mindset – Commitment, focus, and follow-through are essential for successful, complete, and fast toilet training

2. An excellent accelerated toilet training system – one that combines positive behavioral modification techniques within a nurturing environment

3. Thorough preparation – You’ll need to set aside the time and have the required equipment (which shouldn’t be expensive or fancy!)

4. Careful attention to instructions and consistent follow-through – You must be prepared to follow the directions to the letter and

If you’re missing any of the four, you can expect that toilet training your child will take much, much longer than is necessary, and it’s best to prepare yourself for the long haul.

My advice? Avoid learning the hard way through trial and error – there simply is no need to do so. But here’s a word of caution: The Internet is filled with “faster-than-light” toilet training methods and in my opinion, many are just plain terrible. Promoters of these methods will promise you instant results with little, or no, work.

Don’t believe them! Yes, you can potty train your child quickly – even in 24 hours (I’ve personally done this many times) – but it will not happen by accident (no pun intended!). Like most things, your result will be directly related to your efforts. If you exert very little time and effort you can reasonably expect very little in the way of achievements, regardless of what you may have heard.

Here are four quick reference tips that will increase your chances of success:

1. Be certain that your child is physically and developmentally ready for toilet training. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that most children are ready to be toilet trained between the ages of 18 and 27 months. However, use this only as a guide, because experts also concur on this other very critical rule of thumb: Developmental age is much more important than chronological age for determining potty training readiness. (e.g. dressing and undressing themselves; imitating others; frequent “I can do it all by myself!” declarations, and the like). If you’re still uncertain, check with your pediatrician or take one of the toilet training readiness assessments on the Internet.

2. Trust that you and your child can work together to accomplish this joyful rite of passage. As I indicated earlier, I have potty-trained toddlers of every “make and model” – younger, older, cooperative, resistant, talkative, and more. And although each was unique in many ways, they all had one thing in common: they wanted to learn to use the potty, even if they didn’t seem to at first.

Quite frankly, I’ve witnessed only two main reasons for potty training “failures.” They are:

* The child was not old enough and/or developmentally ready. (Refer back to #1)

* The “teacher” (most often a parent) didn’t prepare properly, failed to follow directions carefully, lacked the necessary focus, and/or wasn’t consistent. In other words, the teacher’s efforts must surpass the student’s – at least initially.

3. Choose your accelerated system carefully. Make sure you select a method that will get the job done quickly and joyfully and most importantly, one that is supported in practice and theory by pediatricians, child therapists, and other respected experts. And, please, don’t fall for the hype! Following are some things to consider.

Your toilet training system should…

* Help you determine if your child is ready

* Offer all-inclusive, easy-to-follow instructions (from the planning stage through implementation) using plain language and simple formatting

* Support constructive behavioral modification procedures within a cheerful and supportive environment

* Call for one teacher only (usually a parent) until the initial process is completed

* Disallow punishment for accidents or non-compliance and highly discourage stressful “pushing” of any sort

* Contain a detailed list of necessary supplies and not require specialized (e.g. expensive, fancy, gimmicky) equipment or toys

* Prohibit the use of pull-ups (the worst toilet training aids of all time, in my humble opinion!)

4. Commit the necessary time (24-48 hours), focus, and stick-to-itiveness to the process – no matter how frustrating you may feel at times. In other words, preparation and dogged persistence win this one! Laid-back, “they’ll-figure-it-out-for-themselves” won’t cut it if you plan on toilet training your child quickly. Once again, if you’re determined to approach it with this kind of attitude, you’ll likely be potty training your little one for months.

Having said that, I want to be very clear on the following point. Although it’s entirely possible – and even common – to potty train toddlers in 24 hours or less, you should still set aside two full days to complete it. This will provide plenty of wiggle room to reinforce your teachings for children who learn more quickly and allow you to continue your lessons if your child needs a bit more time. And remember, either is perfectly normal, and since you won’t know how it will go until you’re already well into the process, it’s a good idea to plan for any eventuality.

I hope this advice has proven helpful to those of you who have already decided to – or are considering – toilet training fast. Remember, it can be achieved quickly, merrily, and entirely with a little bit of planning, the right attitude, and a whole lot of love!

Create Your Own Garden Paradise

More and more Americans are realizing that their own homes and backyard gardens can be the paradises they are looking for. As travel becomes too expensive and too inconvenient-with delays, traffic, security checks, and weather problems-homeowners are turning to their own homes as sources of relaxation and fun. All it takes is flowers and garden accessories to turn your outdoor space into your own personal heaven.

First of all, you want to attract friendly wildlife into your garden. There is no better way to do that than with bird feeders. Different birds like different kinds of food and favor specific shapes and styles of feeders. Tubes of red-colored sweet liquid bring hummingbirds to sip the nectar. Chickadees like seeds; you can watch them husk sunflower seeds before they eat them. Woodpeckers prefer suet, which provides both fat and protein.

Many hardware stores and garden centers carry a variety of tube and suet feeders, as well as birdhouses. If you want to be creative you can make your own, or you can buy bird feeders that look like barns, parrots, angels or houses and birdhouses that look like churches, garden statues, or even gas stations.

The birds bring life to your garden during the day. You can carry the feeling of life and the energy of light into the evening with solar lights. Solar lights collect the power of the sun during the day, and produce light when the sun goes down. You can use solar lights for safety and security and to create just the right atmosphere in your paradise garden. They are ideal for areas without access to electrical power.

You can light up a path by placing solar lights shaped like mushrooms in the ground every few feet. Top your fence posts with solar fence post lights and you have instant lighting. Solar lights vary in their power and length of service. A typical life for the LED bulbs they use is 100,000 hours. The rechargeable batteries last about two years and can be replaced.

Candles complement solar lights, providing a feeling that nothing but that flickering light can bring. For an international flare, try a Moroccan or Asian candle lantern. Or let an elephant sculpture hold your candle. Tee lights placed along the edges of a deck create an intimate and welcoming atmosphere.

Nothing is as soothing as the sound of water. No matter how big or small your garden is you can find a fountain to fit. You can place a wall fountain on the side of the house or tuck a cherub fountain in with the plants.

Another way to get enjoyable sound into the garden is with chimes. While there’s nothing wrong with putting wind chimes in the house, they are perfect additions to an outdoor living space. The sound they make depends on their size and the material they are made from. Acrylic chimes, for example, will sound very different from aluminum or ceramic chimes.

Let your imagination be your guide as you create your own garden paradise.

The invitation for the baby shower is decorated with baby bassinet that has a baby inside it. This works for both boys and girls but if twins are expected, then you can use two baby bassinets.

Baby Bib Idea

Using the baby bib is also a great baby shower invitation idea. The invitation can be made in the shape of a baby bib and this invitation can be used for both boys and girls.

Baby Blocks Idea

This is one of those baby shower invitation ideas that use baby blocks of alphabets and numerals for decorating the invitations. These invitations can be used for both girls and boys.

Baby Bottle Idea

You can use any item connected with a baby to make the invitation. A baby bottle would also be a great baby shower invitation idea. The invitations could be made in the shape of a baby bottle or the invitation edges could be decorated with petite baby bottles.

Stork Idea

Traditionally, the stork is depicted as bringing the newborn baby. As such, this is a great baby shower invitation idea. You can find plenty of such invitation cards in the stores and you can select the cards that have pictures of a stork delivering a baby. Such an invitation card can be further decorated by you and you can add a cute caption and your personal touch in the form of a loving message.

Lovely Animals

Babies love cute animals such as furry teddy bears or small dogs. As such baby shower invitations in the forms of these animals would be a great idea. Small furry teddy bears, dogs, ducks or butterflies can be placed on the invitations for decorating the same.

In general, any item connected with a baby would be an excellent idea for incorporating in an invitation card for a baby shower. These items could be any of the following: burp cloth, bib, basket, towel, diapers, baby bottles, nipples, bottle cleaners etc. If you know the sex of the baby, you should use blue color for a male baby and pink color for a female baby. If you do not know the sex, you can use neutral colors like yellow and green.

There are many baby shower invitation ideas that you can incorporate in the invitations but using your creativity will enhance the effect greatly.
