Christmas Greeting Cards: Its Essence and Origin

How do you tell somebody you care? Go to the store, buy a card and let somebody else do the telling for you. Greeting cards are illustrated cards usually featuring a message of greeting or other sentiment. Although greetings cards are usually given on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas or other holidays, they can also be sent on ‘non-occasions’ to say ‘hello’ or ‘thank you’.

Though Christmas has been celebrated since the birth of Christ, the first known usage of any Christmas greeting was in an informal letter written by an English admiral in 1699. The same phrase appeared in the first Christmas greeting card, produced in 19th century England. The then relatively new term 慚erry Christmas?figured prominently in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in 1843. The origin of Christmas greeting refers directly to the Christmas holiday and was initially the first greeting used for any holiday in the November朖anuary timeframe. Christmas greetings are popular among Christians and the non-christians alike.

The father of American Christmas cards was award-winning Boston lithographer/inventor Louis Prang, who, in 1873, reproduced a holiday card autographed by Christmas Carol author, Charles Dickens. Perhaps the greatest of Prang’s many innovations was the development of a multi-color printing process that incorporated as many as 20 colors on one print or card. Hues and detailing were so vivid that artists were sometimes not able to distinguish their own works from reproduced chromos (chromolithographic prints) when hung side by side on a wall. Taking full advantage of this technology, Prang employed the finest artisans of his day. Card painters included the likes of Frederick S. Church, Arthur F. Tait and Winslow Homer. Poetic geniuses such as Longfellow, Tennyson and William Cullen Bryant were among those hired to write verses.

Do you know where the word 慍hristmas?sprang from? Christmas is derived from the words 慍ristes Maesse? meaning Christ’s Mass. It is also sometimes referred to as Xmas. This 慩?in the word stands for 慩ristos? and means Christ in Greek. Xristos Mass is shortened to Xmas.

Christmas is one event in the calendar which is celebrated around the world in the most varied of ways, with customs and traditions differing from one region to another and celebrations spanning a wide range from deeply religious to festively secular. Christmas around the world makes an interesting study by all odds. Motley of bits and pieces taken from this region and that, every country around the world has developed its own way of celebrating Christmas.

Many people send cards to both close friends and distant acquaintances. The greeting in the card can be personalized and are usually exchanged year after year, the phrase “to be off someone’s Christmas card list” is used to indicate a falling out between friends or public figures. Many businesses, particularly smaller local businesses, also send Christmas cards to the people on their customer lists, as a way to develop general goodwill, retain brand awareness and reinforce social networks. These cards are almost always tasteful, and do not attempt to sell a product, limiting themselves to mentioning the name of the business.

Typical content of these Christmas Greeting Cards ranges from truly Christian symbols such as Nativity scenes and the Star of Bethlehem to purely secular references, sometimes humorous, to seasonal weather or common Christmas time activities like shopping and partying.

Many organizations produce special Christmas greeting cards as a fundraising tool; the most famous of these enterprises is probably the UNICEF Christmas card program.

A season full of joy, a holiday brimming with cheer桟hristmas uncorks the festive spirits in the hearts of all and sundry in both secular and religious ways. So we all embrace each other梩he ones loved and lost and the ones still held close梬ith all your good wishes and Christmas holiday spirits. And of course you know the warmest expression of this holiday, Christmas, is the Christmas card. Just like giving presents on Christmas, Christmas greetings also occupy a major part of our Christmas celebrations. It抯 a different feeling altogether to send and receive cards on Christmas! Warm and snug, as they are, Christmas cards help one express a world of thoughts and feelings to one’s loved ones. Research says that as many as two billion Christmas greeting cards are exchanged by Americans every year! Well, that says it all, doesn’t it?

How to Come Up with Personalized Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Because mothers give the gift of life, they deserve a day to celebrate motherhood and thanking mothers with chocolate candy presents or other sweet candy gifts for the precious gift they give us. However, Julia Ward Howe conceived the original idea of the Mother’s Day in 1870 as a day honoring the inherent pacifism of mothers, for honoring them.

During those early days after the U.S. Civil War, mother’s day gifts were not popular, and nobody was aware of the importance of coming up with mother’s day gift ideas ahead of the celebration. Although Mother’s day falls on different days of the year throughout the countries worldwide, most of them celebrate their moms by giving them mother’s day gifts.

Like what happens with other festivities where the heart is involved, chocolaty candy gifts are the most popular presents on this day, followed by any other type of sweet candy present, including but not limited to hearts and stuffed teddy bears as well. Mother’s day gift ideas are countless.

In the United States, the first Mother’s Day was celebrated on May 10, 1908, in Grafton, West Virginia. The first national Mother’s Day was not declared until 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson, giving the date for the celebration to be on the second Sunday in May, although spreading eventually to other countries, which retained the date falling on May 10 even today.

Mother’s day gifts travel wherever a mother is, so this is usually one of the busiest times of year for mail, although sweet candy and chocolate candy gifts are not allowed to be sent by mail in many countries. In America, the U.S. Postal Service was held up for 8 days in 1973 due to the volume of letters and cards sent.

In the United Kingdom, Mother’s day is known as Mothering Sunday falling on the fourth Sunday of Lent, between March and April. Although Mother’s Day gifts are given, unlike in the United States, the British have been celebrating this day for hundreds of years. The celebration origin is uncertain, but is believed to be related to the ancient Celtic fertility rites.

Anticipate the date when planning, and analyze the large array of Mother’s day gift ideas to find the present that meets your criteria of finding the present your mother deserves. Mother’s day gifts include a world of possibilities ranging from flowers, chocolate candy or sweet candy boxes, perfumes and jewelry, to products that improve her health and well being.

However, a personalized Mother’s Day gift, coming from your heart and, when possible, made with your own hands, could double its value.

Don’t Let the Financial Crisis Steal Your Holiday!

The fallout from the financial crisis is compounding holiday stress and threatens to become the Grinch that stole the holidays. People are depressed and anxious about their finances. Stress-related disorders appear to be on the rise and the fun of shopping is now eclipsed with frustration, fear and uncertainty.

The extra stress of holiday spending

The holidays have long been seen as surprisingly stressful. For most of us, the stress of the holidays has come from snarled traffic, crushing crowds, long cashier lines, sold-out toys, tangled strings of broken lights, children screaming, houses not ready for guests, feuding families and other delights of modern life. But today we also face tremendous economic uncertainty, both personally and nationally.

In recent years, it took the average American family five months to pay off the holiday credit card bills. With unemployment on the rise, we now wonder if we will have a job and a paycheck to cover our regular bills. Nationally, we face a bailout burden on top of five years of war debt.

What can we do?

To decrease financial and social stress, it may be a great year to rethink our gift-giving habits and rein in our expectations. Let’s focus on families with children first then at singles. Perhaps it’s time for a family meeting to discuss new approaches that can become new traditions. For example, family members might pick one name out of a hat and show love and caring by focusing on the person’s unique interests and by finding a gift with personal meaning for the recipient.

One Christian couple decided during the early and lean years of their growing family to adopt a three-gift rule. The rule reflected the three gifts the wise men brought to the Christ child. As the children grew older, each child would make a short list of gifts they really wanted. This tradition kept the focus on the holiday they were celebrating.

Another couple who had a blended family wanted to emphasize sharing rather than fostering selfishness, so each year they buy a gift everyone can use together, such as a sleigh, and a few small gifts for each child. A single parent decided to encourage giving rather than receiving and had each child decide on a charity where half of their Hanukkah gelt would go.

How much is enough when it comes to gifts for children? Research summarized in Relieving Your Holiday Stress and Achieving Your New Year’s Resolutions suggests that most children request only three or four of the 11 or 12 gifts they receive during the holidays. This excess raises their expectations and commercializes the holidays.

When children are disappointed

What if the gift your child wants is beyond your budget? This can be an opportunity to help your child understand the difference between a need and a want. If complaints arise about other children’s good fortune, you can explain that Santa’s annual supply was depleted or that some people are able to pay for extra elves. If your child has prayed for the gift, it may be your chance to talk about how an unanswered prayer is usually not a denial, but just a delay. It is also a good time to emphasize the virtues of patience and hope in the face of disappointment.

For an older child, ways of earning and saving for the item during the new year can be discussed. When you learn of unmet desires, you may want to develop a wish file that your child can fill with pictures and notes. This gets your child actively involved and you can use the file to look for gifts that might be on sale before an upcoming birthday.

Make a shopping list and a list of alternatives

Everyone can avoid last minute panic and impulse purchases that they really can’t afford, by making a budget and a shopping list at home, away from the seductive displays and carefree carols of the stores. Putting aside some money for the after-holiday sales can also stretch our dollars.

A spirited way of avoiding big bills is to plan inexpensive activities like caroling, reading holiday stories, or volunteering at shelters and hospitals. These can be a cost-containing way to find the joy in giving and to experience what has been called the helper’s high. Researchers have found this to be much like the runner’s high – a wonderfully relaxing sense of well being. Another inexpensive group activity that fosters gratitude is to pass out blank cards and ask everyone to write down anonymously what they most enjoy about the holidays and then read them aloud.

What about those who cannot afford to travel home this year? The loneliness of being away from family during the holidays can be depressing and can lead to overeating and overdrinking. As Dear Abby wrote, “Loneliness is the ultimate poverty.” So, it is best that singles and lonely couples take a risk, find one another and plan get-togethers. For example, they can try organizing an “orphan” party for all the other people who do not have family or friends in the area.

The underlying roots of overspending

For those who felt deprived as children, the inner conflict between budgeting and spending can be emotionally wrenching. We all know logically that expensive gifts won’t make others love us or guarantee a happy holiday, but many seek vicarious pleasure from giving children gifts that they never got and social status from giving friends and co-workers big ticket gifts. On the other hand, for those with holiday memories of dreams come true, recapturing the magic of holidays past can be overwhelmingly expensive.

We may need to ask if our focus on buying and getting is a vain attempt to fill an abiding emptiness that only God can fill. If so, it is important to leave time and energy for spiritual needs. Traditionally, holidays are a time for friends, family and faith.

Getting to the root of dangerous financial temptations can free us from empty glitter and expensive gifts, so we can focus on giving love, teaching love and receiving love. Sounds a lot like the moral of Dr. Seuss’ story about the Grinch. So, find ways of fulfilling your deepest needs, watch your heart grow three sizes larger and don’t let the financial crisis steal your holiday.

Cutting Back on Christmas

In this tough economy, many families have been forced to cut back on their Christmas spending. However, it doesn’t have to mean that you can’t have a nice Christmas with the family. Here are a few suggestions on how to approach Christmas with limited funds.

  • Set a budget. Determine how much money you can realistically afford to spend this holiday season and stick to it. Do not use money from your savings account. Financial security is much more important to your family than some fancy Christmas presents.
  • Make the holidays for the kids. Be realistic. Instead of shopping for a long list of friends and family, make it a point to buy nice presents for the kids in the family. Most adults will understand and may feel relieved that they don’t have to worry about buying a gift for you.
  • Cut out the holiday fluff. Avoid spending money for new decorations, cards and wrapping paper. Instead, use things you have around the house. Use the decorations saved from previous years and get the kids to help you make decorations and cards. It will add to the holiday fun.
  • Be honest with children. If you have children and you are limited on the money you have to spend for the holidays, be honest with your kids. Tell them that with the tough economy, there won’t be as much money to spend for Christmas this year. Most kids will understand.
  • Emphasize family time. The most important part of the holidays, whether you have extra money to spend or not, should be the time that you spend with your family and loved ones.

Even without extra money or gifts, the holiday season can be a very special time if you plan ahead and make the time you spend with family and friends interesting and fun.

Reasons to Let Your Kids Decorate Your Home For Christmas

We as a parent are often skeptical about so many things, when it comes to our children. Most of the time, we are thinking from our mind rather than our hearts. Ironically it should be the other way round, where kids are concerned the decision should be taken by our hearts most of the time. At the time of Christmas we are much excited about decorating our house. Every individual wants to be a part of it, and so do the children. Irrespective of what age group they belong, whether teenage or toddlers, they all want to contribute in their own special way for decorating house. As a parent we should give them opportunity to devote their time in decoration and almost appreciate their efforts as well.

There are so many benefits which can be achieved by allowing kids to decorate home for Christmas. Children have a habit of being recognized for whatever little effort they make, and once praised they help with double the vigor. This makes them feel important and worth of some special tasks such as decorating your house for Christmas. Once appreciated and allowed to decorate, they might also brainstorm for innovative ideas to make your house look beautiful. You would be surprised to see that how original and inventive some of their suggestions could be. Kids always bring some freshness around by implementing their unique thoughts in the form of decoration. This in turn boosts their confidence and helps them in being imaginative and skillful.

Apart from this you should also take children for the shopping of Christmas decoration items. This would make them feel vital and significant. If kids are little grown up, then perhaps you can handover the budget for house decoration to them, and ask them to shop for it. Kids feel accountable when trusted with money and given a budget to stick to. In such a situation they act responsible and most of the time would make a better bargain while shopping, than you. If accompanied by you, they probably would suggest you more advance choices which are new in the current season, as kids are more aware of latest items floating in markets. Since their mind is bubbling with more novel decorating ideas, they are the best people to choose the decorative items well suited and required. However by being there you can always suggest and improvise economic pieces which can be used best to its ability.

You should also ensure that you and kids both are integral part of decorating your house for Christmas. It will give them an innate sense of belongingness. It could be the best time for parents and kids bonding as well. You can make small discussions on sidelined, as well as serious issues bothering your kids. You should give them free rein when it comes to decorate their own personal corners or rooms, however some offhanded suggestions from you would always be welcomed by them. You can also ask them to draw pictures and color them, or make small hanging pieces for Christmas tree. This would further improve their talents and kids are always enthusiastic for such activities.

Lastly we should not just allow our children to decorate our houses for Christmas, but must ensure that they are a definite part of it. Christmas brings lot of prosperity and happiness with it and it can only be complete if every individual in the family is part of decorating the house in someway or other.

Stay Safe With Your Christmas Tree!

A fire in your home can be absolutely devastating no matter when it happens, but it’s particularly dangerous during the Holidays. Fire departments across the country report hundreds of cases each year where they are required to respond to a fire caused by a Christmas tree. They are not the most common cause of fire but they can be particularly dangerous – 1 out of every 18 report Christmas tree fire has resulted in death.

When decorating the tree this year, please be careful and follow these easy safety tips.

- Buy a fresh tree
The first step starts the moment you go out looking for your tree. When selecting a live tree, take a look at the needles. If they are brown or if they snap in half easily, then the tree is dry. A healthy, fresh tree’s needles should bend and bounce back into shape if you carefully bend them in half.

- Buy a sturdy stand
Make sure that whatever stand you use to hold your tree up is very sturdy and won’t tip over easily.

- Don’t forget the water
This one is very important – water your tree regularly. Not only will it keep your Christmas tree looking fresh and healthy throughout the season, but it will keep the tree from drying out. A dry tree will catch fire very easily.

- Keep the tree away from heat sources
Your Christmas tree may look great right next to the fireplace, but this is a very bad idea. Keep your tree at least three feet away from any heat source.

- Never ever, ever put candles on or near your Christmas tree
Before electricity, people used to used to hang candles on their Christmas trees to light them. Before electricity, people would also lose entire blocks of homes because of a tree going up in flames. We’ve advanced since then. Keep candles away from your tree.

- Do not block any exits with your tree
Should the worst happen and your tree catches fire, you don’t want to have to get past it to escape your home.

- Inspect your Christmas lights
In general, Christmas lights do not last very long and the older they get, the more prone to accidents they are. Inspect your lights every year before you place them on the tree. Plug them in, check the wires, make sure everything works and is intact. If it isn’t, buy brand new lights.

- Buy only lights that have been tested
When buying new lights, look on the package for a mark that says UL, ETL or CAS. These marks mean that the lights have been safety tested.

- Follow the directions
Read the directions and follow the safety precautions. Don’t use more strings of lights than it recommends.

- Unplug
Unplug your Christmas lights before you leave home or go to bed at night. This counts for your outdoor lights too.

- Clean up
Remember that your Christmas tree is at its most dangerous when it gets dry. When the needles start falling off, it’s time to throw out the tree. Make sure you also clean up any fallen needles and do not leave these in the home or garage – they catch fire very easily.

- Be prepared
As with any possible safety hazard, the best safety measure is to be prepared ahead of time. Make sure that your home has working smoke detectors and fire alarms. Make sure that you’ve worked up a plan with your family about what to do in case of a fire. Plan out evacuation routes from each room, know what to do, where to go and who to call. It’s better to be over-prepared than to be caught off guard.

Be safe out there, and Happy Holidays!

Valentine’s Day Proposals

Are you thinking of proposing this Valentine抯 Day? If so, here are a few things you need to know.

A proposal should be done privately, just between the two of you. Yes, you see people on the news proposing in front of thousands of people or maybe a friend proposed in front of dinner guests at some sort of gathering. Occasionally you might catch someone proposing at a restaurant or some other public place. But it抯 not a good thing.

The reason you shouldn抰 do this is because it抯 not fair to the person you抮e proposing to. She will not feel free to say “no”, if in fact she isn抰 ready for marriage. Or maybe she needs time to think about the question. She抣l feel rushed into an answer that may not be correct. You don抰 want her to marry you just because she felt pressured into it; it抯 a disaster waiting to happen. Start your new life together on the right foot.

If you still think you need to include friends and family, you can throw an engagement party after she says “yes”, and both of you can announce the good news together.

Here are a few romantic ideas for popping the question:

Have an indoor picnic complete with picnic blanket, basket and fresh summer flowers. Fill the basket with all sorts of picnic foods and the ring box. When she starts taking food out of the basket, she will come across the ring box and bam, you can pop the question.

Weather permitting, you can go for a walk to a secluded area and when you sit down for a rest, pull the ring from you pocket, get on one knee and ask your love to marry you.

Make a romantic dinner for two. Use roses, candles, soft music, wine glasses and nice dishes to decorate. If you抮e not a good cook, buy dinner for two and put it on your own dishes at home. Propose to her during dinner.

Plan an evening out, do anything from dinner, dancing, go to a show or go for a drive. Because it抯 Valentine抯 Day, add things to your evening like flowers and other Valentine抯 Day things. Then when the evening is over, pull the ring out and pop the question.

Go for wine tasting and a tour at a winery. Buy a bottle of wine and when sharing it together give her the ring box to open. Ask her or have a note or poem in the box with the ring asking her to marry you.

Plan a romantic weekend getaway and propose when the moment feels right.

Whichever way you choose to propose, make it heartfelt and have fun. After all, you will be spending the rest of your lives together.

Congratulations and I hope you have a long and happy marriage.

Your New Years Eve Questions Answered

The Christmas holiday is over and with it a sense of relief. You dashed around and finished all of your shopping on time. The holiday gatherings are over and the food has been eaten.

You should have an immense sense of relief but there is always that nagging sensation of being let down. Perhaps it is time to take some recreational fun for you and your loved ones. New Years Eve is one of the biggest party days of the year.

Adults around the world celebrate the end of the old year and the beginning of the New Year. Small, intimate gatherings or large celebrations bring out the party animal in us all. There are plenty of places to visit on this special night each year and it can all seem confusing if you attempt to do this at the last minute.

You may be the club sort or simply want to host your own New Years Eve party. The choices are endless and can be anything you want it to be. If you are unsure of what to do on New Years Eve, this article is for you. You can get ideas on what to do to ring in the New Year in style.

What is the history of New Years Eve?

Celebrating the New Year is not a modern tradition. This history begins with the Babylonians hosting festivities that lasted for days to mark the first New Moon after the First day of spring each year. But you have to keep in mind that the calendar in which modern humanity uses has changed over the years through the whims of different rulers.

It was not until Julius Caesar developed the Julian calendar that the days became to coincide with modern festivities. Over the centuries festivities have marked the end of the old year with the birth of a new year. Each culture has had different ways of celebrating this rebirth.

What are New Years Eve cruises?

New Years Eve cruises are exactly as the name implies. It is a cruise aboard a ship that is out to sea or in port on New Years Eve. Most cruise lines are operational during this time period and offer package deals for families and individuals wanting to ring in the New Year in a different manner than the typical party.

Cruise lines may have a ball or some type of party that fits in with any traveler’s desire. You can elect to cruise the Mediterranean or the Caribbean waters. The choice is completely up to you but make sure you book your trip in advance because space fills up quickly.

How far in advance should I make New Years Eve plans?

If you have been invited to a party at a nearby destination or friend’s house you will want to RSVP quickly as a courtesy to the host or hostess. If you intend to book a package deal, travel abroad or take a cruise you will want to book your vacation as far in advance as possible to avoid the rush.

This is especially true if you are flying. Some hotels offer last minute packages to sell out unused rooms but you do not want to count on this as part of your determining factors in where to go. It is best to have your New Years Eve plans in place at least by Christmas. I have young children and they cannot be awake until midnight. What can I do to celebrate the New Years with them?

Many parents of young children fool their kids into thinking midnight has arrived by setting the clocks forward. You can turn the channel to a television station in another part of the world that is on a different time zone.

Most small children do not realize the difference between nine o-clock and midnight. If you feel uncomfortable with the deception then just explain to them that they are not old enough to stay up until midnight.

Children under the age of seven will fall asleep before reaching the magic hour. You can let them try to stay up as late as they can and chances are they will have the time of their lives just with that extra bit of freedom from a regularly scheduled bedtime.

Are there inexpensive parties and trips for New Years Eve?

If you cannot afford a trip out of area there are usually many local parties in your neck of the country. Local country clubs, hotels and resorts often have New Years Eve festivities. Some airlines and travel agents have last minute deals to popular resorts.

It is always better to make arrangements before New Years Eve but if you cannot there is always the possibility of last minute packages that become available due to cancellation. You will have to stay diligent but you can have a great time ringing in the New Year.

Six Tell-Tale (And Funny) Signs That You’re Addicted to Christmas

In case you didn’t know it — it is possible to be addicted to Christmas. Certainly, some level of excitement over Christmas is normal, but at what point does it border on unhealthy (or even insane)?

For many individuals, a Christmas addiction poses a greater threat than getting run over by a reindeer. If you want to know what the top six signs of being addicted to Christmas are, read on…

#1 — Boycotting Anti-Santa Malls

If you refuse to shop at a mall that doesn’t have a Santa on duty at all times, you’re probably suffering from a Christmas addiction. (Reality check: Once you hit the age of 7 or 8, you probably don’t need to get your photo taken sitting on Santa’s lap!)

#2 — Spiking Your Eggnog?

If you need spiked eggnog just to make it through your Christmas shopping marathon, it’s a telltale sign that you’re probably addicted to Christmas.

#3 — Desperately Seeking the North Pole

If you’ve tried Googling directions from your house to the North Pole five times and still aren’t sure how to get to Santa’s house, you are probably addicted to Christmas.

#4 — Expecting Mail from Santa

If you check your mail everyday hoping Santa sent you a letter, you should seek help to deal with your Christmas addiction.

#5 — Taking the Christmas Theme Too Far

If you sleep on red and green plaid sheets and wear red and green pajamas with socks and underwear decorated with Santa every night beginning on December 1 until Christmas Eve, you are definitely addicted to Christmas (and you should really keep that secret to yourself).

#6 — Identity Issues

Finally, if you’ve submitted a name-change application to legally change your last name to Clause (and you’re getting all new monogrammed towels embroidered with a red and green ?S? and ?C?), you have some serious Christmas addiction issues.

What Is the Solution for Christmas Addiction?

Eat two Christmas wreath cookies each and every day until December 25th and call me in the morning. It has been documented that Christmas addiction rapidly subsides at 11:59 p.m. on December 25. Take your cookies, drink plenty of eggnog, and wait it out until then.
