What’s New in LED Christmas Decorations?

The winter has arrived and so has the time for Christmas preparations. People are looking for various decorative items that they can use to decorate for Christmas. There is always a large variety of decorative items available in the stores and increasingly, many of these make use of the technology known as LED lights.

The Christmas tree in your living room is perhaps the most attractive entity in your house on the 25th of December. There’s a big variety of LED lights that are available that can be neatly draped around the tree and these take the place of the older style of lights that are larger, generate more heat and use more energy. A large number of color combinations are available, from multi colored lights to white lights to one color strands. Some lights work on battery as well and look great draped around an outdoor tree or bush.

Rope lights that contain LED’s can be easily found in stores and are becoming one of the most common decorative light options that people use for Christmas. Candles make a place look elegant and beautiful. LED Christmas candles can be found in to stores and are one of the latest decorative items. LED candle lights are great, since they are so much safer than if you use real candles!

Amongst the various kinds of LED lighting, the one that has the shape of a ball placed over a torch look pretty and beautiful. These kinds of LED lighting add to the spirit of the festival. Mostly, these kinds of LED lights are in the shape of a small crystal ball that is placed on a small base. The base lights up the bottom of the ball and the ball glows in different colors. These are some of the new ways that Christmas decoration manufacturers are using LED’s in their products.

Garland lights have been in the stores for a long time now. However, some of these lights are expensive. LED lights last longer than conventional lights and generally have better quality than conventional lights. These lights are generally used to decorate the trees and bushes but they can also be used at various other places in the interior and exterior of your home.

Amongst the most common colors of lights, people prefer white, red, green, yellow and blue. A combination of these colors is the best option, since there are few things that say Christmas better than Christmas lights. LED light products are not very expensive and can be purchased at reasonable prices and in many styles. So, the next time you’re in the market for Christmas d閏or, consider all the options available in LED form! You might be surprised at what’s available.

How Does Your Amish Family Celebrate Christmas?

We were taught that Christmas is Jesus’s Birthday and that day is to be celebrated as such. However, in our actions to me it was just another Sunday. Many Christmas’s as a young child we never had company or went visiting on Christmas. We spend the day at home like any other in-between (since the Amish only have church every two weeks we had in-between Sundays) Sunday. My mother would read (silently) the bible or the Budget (Amish newspaper) and we usually played games. The only present we sometimes got was one board game for the whole family.

One year when I was in 3rd grade I think we got a Monopoly game so then we played that all day. My Father loved Monopoly and he was able to win most of the time. Other board games we had were Aggrivation, Chinese Checker, The Game of Life, and Upwords. The only card game we were allowed to play was Old Maid, Go Fish, and Uno. Many Amish do play cards for a pass time but my parents did not like playing cards. In our young folks group we played Rook quite a lot.

For the most part I know that many families got together on Christmas and exchanged gifts but we lived far away from any immediate family and my grandparents had all passed so we never had any place to go on the Holidays. The only other difference from everyday life is that my sisters and I would make some special treats (recipes that were too expensive in everyday life) like: rice krispie bars, chocolate covered pretzels and coconut bon bons. I also remember baking extra pies and breads so we could give some to the neighbors. I really enjoyed that because I knew the neighbors loved my baking.

In school we celebrated Christmas a little different. We colored Christmas pictures to hang in the windows or on the wall, we made paper chains to hang from corner to corner with a colored bell in the middle. I don’t know why decorating was allowed in school but not at home. However, I also know that the extent of the decorating at school depended on who the teacher was. Sometimes the parents would complain on how much decorating was done at school.

At school we also exchanged names for gifts. The gifts were supposed to be fairly inexpensive because like my family, at one point there were 7 children going to school. A couple of days prior to Christmas we had our program. For that day we invited all the parents who brought food for the potluck. Once everyone got to school then we performed our program which consisted of singing Christmas songs and reciting poems. Then lunch was served and after that one of the dad’s would play Santa (no costume) and hand out all the gifts to the students. When everyone had opened their gifts the children would go home with their parents and Christmas vacation began and lasted until the 2nd day after when normal school would resume.

I hope this helps you to understand how the Amish celebrated Christmas.

Halloween Costumes – Shop Early to Save Yourself From Headache!

Have you ever wondered why you always have trouble finding the “right” Halloween costume for yourself? It happens just about every year – you wait until it is almost October 30, and then suddenly remember, “Oh, tomorrow is Halloween! I need to buy a sexy or spooky costume quickly!”

As it turns out, by the time you start shopping for the costumes, most of the people are already done with their shopping. As a result, stores are either empty or have only those boring cop and nurse costumes that you may not want. So what would you do?

You could save yourself this headache by shopping early. I suggest that you make a nice plan on what would do like your costume to be like. For that, you need to decide on the type of character you want to become, the color of your costume, etc. Once you have planned it all, you can start hopping from store to store. On the other hand, if you prefer to shop online, that is good too.

Don’t feel bad about shopping for Halloween costumes from as early as summer. You know, you may be saving some cash in the process since most shop owners offer big discounts to early shoppers.

In contrast, if you start shopping near the end of October, you’re competing with all the other ladies for the right dress! Naturally, as Halloween approaches, you find it more and more difficult to get your favorite costume, not to mention that during this time the price of Halloween costumes increase manifold (as a result of high demand and low supply)! As an early shopper, you would naturally get to select from a wide variety of Halloween costumes because not many people start shopping around that time. So whether you wish to become a vampire, witch, charming princess or Spiderwoman, you would surely get what you need!

Along with shopping your costume, you should also not forget to buy all the accessories that you need to complement the costume. For example, depending on the Halloween character you want to become, you may need contact lenses, make-up, masks, hats, wigs, etc., in order to complement and enhance your looks. Just like Halloween costumes, these things too run short of supply near the end of October!

You have tried your best to find the best looking costume on October 30th without much success. Why not try out my technique this year? I assure you that you will enjoy the difference and save yourself a lot of stress!

Remember that Halloween is all about having fun, rather than getting bogged down with costume issues at the last minute!

Holiday Office Party Games to Liven Up the Crowd

Holiday office party games can take on many different forms. If your office group is small, your party can either take place at the office, a restaurant, or in of the employee’s homes. Party games can be the old favorites involving cards or board games, but they can also include games made up that are connected with the work that you do. Games that follow the same idea as bingo can work very well, but the card is adapted to categories that would be found in your particular field of work.

Memory games are other holiday office party ideas often enjoyed by staff. Competition games work well in offices where workers put things together or assemble things. An example of this might be a group of people that assemble furniture. The game would consist of giving them several pieces of furniture from different items, and then they would have to sort out what the specific pieces of furniture that go together and then choose one to assemble. This can be timed with a stop watch or be done at the same time others are doing it to see who is fastest and who completes the job properly.

This type of game works well for restaurant workers, either for kitchen staff or front of the house staff. Anything from opening and serving a bottle of wine, to being able to tell the beer that you are serving from their color and scent can work well when putting together such a competition. Menu competitions and what goes into some of the more complicated dishes, to what beverages are served and the price of each item can be fun especially with a prize at the end to sweeten the contest. This may sound odd to some, but people enjoy playing games connected with things that they are knowledgeable about.

Games are not meant to be so complicated that it takes the fun out of the event. These games can also be played in teams. You might have definitions written on paper that you or a team may need to find the right category for.

Mother’s Day Love Letter – The Best Way to Express Your Gratitude and Appreciation for Mom!

Abraham Lincoln said ?”All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother”

Wow! That is a worthy compliment to give mom this Mother’s Day!

Mothers are the source of our beginning and are always there for us, whether we realize it or not. Could that be one of the reasons why most of us take our mothers for granted?

We just expect her to be there. We pay little attention to the time of day, her schedule, her health or her state of mind when we need her. We just call on her and she shows up and gives us the warmth and comfort we抮e desperately looking for. Fascinating, isn抰 it?

Mothers are our first teachers and the biggest compliment a mother can get is when you tell her that she is the guiding light in your life and that you want to be like her.

We always think about sitting down with mom one day and telling her how much we appreciate her and how grateful we are for having her as our mother.

What is it that you’d like to tell mom this Mother’s Day?

That you owe it to her for who you are today?

That you did notice all the things she did for you?

That you抮e proud of her for raising you the way she did?

That you抮e blessed to have her as your mom?

That you抮e her biggest fan and dream about being like her?

However, most of us find it hard to share all these feelings with mom, even if we manage to get some time with her!

There are a few reasons why we struggle to have this intimate conversation with mom.

The biggest one of course is that we will mess it all up and it won’t come out the way it should.

A second reason is that our emotions will get the better of us and we don’t want to look silly crying like a baby in front of mom.

But mom needs to know how you feel about her sooner than later!

G.B. Stern said: 揝ilent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone?

So, what is the solution to your problem?

Write a heartfelt love letter to mom this Mother抯 Day and share with her the things you抳e been carrying in your heart for a long time.

Unlike a conversation, you can edit your letter a million times before you give it to mom. You can take your time to write it, think through what you want to say and here’s the best part – you can even sleep on it.

Also, a letter is permanent and will make a lasting impression on mom and is something she can read over and over again.

“But, I’m not good at writing letters!” is your next objection, right?

Follow these 6 simple steps and you will be on your way to writing that heartfelt letter to mom:

1. Relax, It抯 a Love Letter to Mom – This love letter is an intimate conversation between you and mom and there are no rules to be abided by. Do not get caught up in getting the letter right and using sophisticated words. Even if you make a mistake, is mom going to notice?

2. Collect Your Thoughts ?Take some time to think about what you want to say before you start writing. Go down memory lane and think about your growing up years and how mom was an integral part of that. What is the message you want to get across at this moment in your life?

3. Overcoming Writer’s Block – For most people, the difficulty in letter-writing is the start and the close. You don抰 have to write the letter in a linear fashion. Write the part that comes to you first. You can always go back and complete the other sections later.

4. Write From Your Heart – Be yourself and write from your heart. Write your letter as if you were there talking to mom face to face. Tell her how much you love her and appreciate her and why.

5. Acknowledge Mom抯 Sacrifices ?Let mom know that you抳e noticed the sacrifices she抯 made and that you appreciate her for all that she does. Mention one or two events from the past to show her that you really remember. The older the event, the more dramatic the impact it will have on mom.

6. Give Mom the Greatest Compliment Ever – Imitation is the best form of flattery! Tell mom that you抮e her biggest fan and that you secretly wish to be like her! Tell her that you have learnt well from her and try to emulate her in many ways in your life. If you抮e doing something specific with your kids that will make her proud, mention that in the letter.

A Mother抯 Day Love Letter written using the above steps will give mom the satisfaction that money can never buy! This letter of yours is sure to be cherished, saved and read many times over, for many years to come!

A final word of caution – Write only what you really feel in your heart.

Hosting a Holiday Party on a Dime

This holiday season many people have opted out of hosting their traditional holiday bash. Of course it is understandable with this unsteady job market and this hard economy we are facing today. However, you can still have your traditional holiday bash, only with a few cost saving dishes and drinks!

If you want to host a holiday party, but you don’t have the usual funds available try these simple cost saving ideas:

Drinks – Most parties require an open bar. However, an open bar can put a big dent in the party funds. If you still choose to opt for an open bar, try skimping on the name brand liquor. Instead borrow or buy used decanters to pour cheaper liquor into. No one will notice especially if you are making mixed drinks!

Food – The next biggest expense is of course the food. Instead of making a turkey or a ham, try serving finger foods! Finger foods can be filling and most importantly cheap! Set out a few of your favorite finger foods and serve them on your nice platters and serving dishes!

Party Gifts – How we all love to make and give each one of our guest a parting gift for coming to our parties! However, if you are trying to cut back on expenses you might want to cut this expense entirely. If you feel obligated to hand one out you might want to consider scaling the price of the gifts back considerably. Try giving a bag with a personal note inside for each one of your guest with holiday: scented candles, inexpensive chocolates, cookie cutters, or prepackage cookie mixes.

Entertainment – We love live entertainment, but our pocket books don’t seem to like them as much! Allow a friend or family member to maintain the music with CD’s that the crowd will love. Or you can ask your talented friends or family to play at your party!

You can still enjoy hosting a holiday party on a budget! Just remember that the point of the holiday party is to bring your loved ones together to celebrate and have a shared night of fun!

Holiday Flower Arrangements Add Beauty to Any Celebration

Any room becomes warm and inviting when you use beautiful, seasonal floral arrangements to brighten your celebration. There are flowers that have come to represent certain holidays such as poinsettias for Christmas, red roses for Valentine’s Day and lilies for Easter. However, holiday flower choices are not just limited to these traditional flowers. Use your imagination in creating your holiday flower arrangements.

Flower arrangements add a great deal to the decor and the ambience of parties, open houses and just day to day visitation and create a festive mood for the family as well. Choosing flowers or plants that last a long time is thrifty and saves time as well during the busy holiday season. Many people prefer the “green” choices in their floral purchases as well as the rest of their lifestyles, including buying live plants only.

When choosing flower arrangements, you need to think outside the box. Beyond the usual flowers and greenery in a vase, you can come up with ideas based around unique containers or seasonal themes. You can purchase terrariums and have them filled with several different live plants for an indoor garden. For Christmas you might choose to add evergreens to your arrangement or to buy a toy sled to use as a unique container.

Some people like to make their own floral arrangements to express their creativity and style or to economize, while many others prefer to rely on their florist to make appropriate and beautiful flower arrangements. You can use online floral websites to do it yourself and find ideas to personalize your own arrangements.

Growing your own garden of flowers, ferns and other greenery provides you with the least expensive source for floral arrangements. When designing your own flower arrangements then, the first place you’ll be able to look is in your own back yard. It’s also possible to forage for flowers and plants in the open countryside, but you need to ask the property owner first and then avoid picking protected wildflowers and plants.

Arranging flowers for the holidays may become a tradition amongst families as a way to spend more time together. Members of a family may work together on floral project, or assign individuals rooms in which to create their own arrangement as a way to express creativity. The presence of fresh flowers and plants seems to brighten the holidays with joy and an array of colors.

How the Devil Did Satan Take Over Halloween?

Most of the young trick-or-treaters, prowling the dusky gloom on Halloween, don’t really care much about the background of the holiday/holy day they are celebrating. Dressed in various costumes as goblins and ghosts, heroes or old-time villains, these children unwittingly act out ancient traditions that began with a Celtic pagan festival some 20 centuries ago in Europe, and gradually evolved into the Catholic celebration on the eve of the feast of All Saints. Much of the tradition, however, is obscured by the relentless passage of time and fading memories.

One thing is certain about the celebration: the devil had no part in it. He was later added to the celebration gradually after St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland in 432 A.D. Up to that time, the Irish and other Celtic peoples such as the Scots, Welsh, Cornish, Bretons and others had no notion of a devil in their worship.

But they did have a strong sense of an afterlife which as called simply “otherworld.” The Irish Celts called it “Tir na Nog” (land of eternal youth). It was a joyous place. It was more a land of enchantment and a paradise in the Western Sea.

Reigning over this otherworld was Samhain (pronounced “sow-en) who was known as the “Lord of the Dead.” But he had no relationship whatever to the devil.

Even today in Ireland, one of the Celtic countries where the ancient customs still survive, All Hallows Eve (Halloween) before All Saints’ Day is known as Samhain Eve. The following day marks the beginning of the Celtic New Year, Nov. 1, and also marks the end of the grazing season and the gathering of all crops for the winter.

According to ancient Celtic custom, all fires had to be extinguished and new ones lighted to set off a new year of abundance and light, and another victory for the sun over darkness.

For the ancient Celts, Halloween could also be a night of danger and dread as a time when otherworld spirits roamed freely. The Celts left “treats” on their doorsteps for the spirits of their ancestors, and carved out oversized rutabagas or turnips and placed a candle inside these “spirit lights” to guide their ancestors home. It could be a night of either happiness or discomfort depending on the relationship between families and their ancestors.

The spirits of the otherworld could also return to even an old score to demand justice for a previous injustice done to them. Hence the Celts began to wear costumes and masks as a way to hide from vengeful ancestors. It was also a time when the future could be understood by following certain practices such as bobbing for apples. When one was caught, the apple was peeled and the skins thrown over one’s shoulder. The peels were then supposed to indicate the name of a future spouse or other important information.

The Celts also believed that black cats crossing a person’s path would bring bad luck. The Celts believed the black cats were former beings who were changed into animals as a form of punishment for having done evil. The Celts also believed that spirits lived in the trees, and would, therefore “knock on wood” to assure that their good luck would continue. This may well be part of the understanding of the use of the term “the luck of the Irish.” But it was also used to explain away their great success as immigrants, especially in the United States.

Before coming to America as a holiday, Halloween had other religious origins. There is still much debate as to how the feast of All Saints came to replace the old Celtic festival. About 610 A.D. the Roman Emperor Phocas presented Pope Boniface IV with the Roman Pantheon-the temple where pagan Roman gods and goddesses were worshipped. The Pantheon was then rededicated under the title “Santa Maria ad Martyres” (St. Mary of the Martyrs.) The dedication ceremony was held May 13, and its anniversary was observed each year with great ceremony. Some historians consider this to be the origin of the feast of All Saints.

Other scholars insist that pope Gregory III originated the feast when he dedicated an oratory to all saints in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It seems that from this time on, at least in England, the feast was celebrated on Nov. 1.

However, noted scholar J. Hennig rejects both of these explanations and places the origin of the Nov. 1 date in Ireland. According to this theory, the feast passed from Ireland to Northnumberland in England, and then to the continent of Europe where other Celtic peoples would also align it with their New Year’s celebration. It should also be noted that at this period Irish missionaries had already begun their travels to England and the continent, and had great influence in church matters in that area.

Whatever the exact pagan Celtic or Christian origin of Halloween, we can thank their modern counterparts, the Irish and Scots-Irish for preserving such a joyful children’s feast.

The Irish were largely responsible or bringing their customs and celebrations to America in the mid-19th century when thousands of them crowded the shores of the United States following the Great Famine of 1847-50 in Ireland. They had spread their empire and customs from the islands of the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea, and from the Mediterranean to the North Sea.

These energetic and inventive people have given the world a zest for living, an incredible supply of sages and legends and a great modern literature from writers such as Shaw, Yeats, O’Casey, Beckett, Joyce and others.

And also with all that, they gave a Catholic/Christian meaning to an ancient holiday and brought Halloween to America for the enjoyment of trick-or-treaters all over the land.

But they didn’t bring Satan or devil-worship to a joyous celebration of the Celtic New Year, Nov. 1.

Poinsettia Care – Tips to a Great Looking Poinsettia Plant

Poinsettia care is not that difficult but there are a few guidelines to which you should adhere in order to make sure your plant remains healthy and colorful during the holiday season. The amount of light that your plant receives is very important. A typical plant will require around fourteen hours of complete darkness to encourage the budding process of the plant. This will allow the leaves to reach their truest color. Many people believe that the plant has flowers but actually it is the brilliant red leaves that make the plant so appealing to the eye.

The right amount of water is also critical to the health and well being of your poinsettia plant. Often people make the mistake of over watering. Proper plant care requires watering your plant once or twice a week making sure the top one inch of soil remains moist. To much water and the roots may began to rot. Poinsettia plants do not like cold temperatures so if possible place your plant in a south window where your plant can soak up the afternoon sun. Fertilize your plant twice a month and you should have a plant that you can enjoy though out the holiday season.

If you are so inclined and with a little effort you can enjoy your plant year round. When spring time rolls around and the temperatures began to climb (into the fifties and sixties) you can transplant the poinsettia plant outside. Plant in an area where there will be some shade each day. Make sure to occasionally water your plant. Trim the plant back so that there are only one or two buds per stem and you will have a summer poinsettia plant you can enjoy for years to come.

The poinsettia plant was originally introduced to the United States from the country of Mexico in the early 1800’s. The story is told of the first United States Ambassador to Mexico Joel Roberts Poinsett walking through the Mexican countryside and coming across a poinsettia plant growing next to the road. The ambassador was so enthralled with the beauty of the plant that he brought it back to the United States upon his return. In addition to introducing the poinsettia plant to the United States Ambassador Poinsett was also responsible for the creation of the Smithsonian Institution.

Poinsettias can liven up your holiday season by providing warmth and vibrant colors to you home and surroundings. With attention and proper poinsettia care you can have a plant that will brighten your life for many years to come.
