Roseville pottery is a pretty old art that has been cultivated for many decades. Its origin comes from a city of Ohio called Roseville, which later named this pottery too. In 1890 there was a new company which produced this pottery named ‘Roseville Pottery’. It mainly produced bowls and dishes which were used for cooking, storing food and other uses. What the president of this company, George Young didn’t know was that in a few decades the pottery they are producing will become very valuable and expensive.
The company wasn’t very successful back then. This is the reason why the president of the company decided to hire the artist Ross Purdy to design his own line of pottery so that the company would gain more reputation nationwide and worldwide too. He was pretty successful and the pottery he produced became very wanted on the pottery art world. He was very successful because of the colors he used, which were all of the dark ones, combined with the light colors. This artist brought the first recognition to this company. Through the next years the company hired other artist such as John Herold who made unique glaze finishes which are now almost impossible to remake.
This company decided to expand its business by hiring an additional fifty employees and now having a total of 350 employees. It continuously hired new designers who brought their own lines to the company making it be more successful than ever. The fact that the company continuously hired new artists made this pottery have special features. By the beginning of the 20th century, this company had already had special designs including Sang de Boeuf which was a red glaze finish, Egypto which was known for green shaded finishes, the Mara line with light on paint effects, and other linings such as Fudji, Woodland, Della Robbia and so on. Nowadays, pottery produced by this company back then is pretty expensive but it is very decorative too.
