Science books adapt to new knowledge, with always some insisting they liked the old science better. We watch out for health myths, we need to shop for truth in wisdom, some times perhaps implicit but not spelled out explicitly, and how important it is, and was to observe when a news finding was of such note that it was important to not simply turn the page to check the ball scores, but to pause and orient our lives to this adjusted reality. Then, decide to change several habits, and act on it. I give my personal example of how to act on new facts. Watch, listen, learn, act.
When I read how turkey was an under used high power protein food, I went out and bought several turkey drumsticks and made a great large stew, removing the skin, cooking it slowly with many veggies, a cup of prune nectar: Tastes fabulous. That is, I took the time to internalize this information and make it a part of myself. Thus we discuss these findings with the light on change of behavior, internalize what is good, take prune nectar to let go of what is not.
About the myth about turkey making you more drowsy than pork or beef or other foods. It is just not true. Healthy lifestyles such in as the wisdom of Benjamin Franklin remind us that any big holiday involves over eating. And since turkey is the favored dish for thanksgiving and Christmas, it takes the blame. This is an under use of a superior protein source by humans, who believe the myth that turkey will make them drowsy and avoid it most of the year. Turkey is, in fact, healthier than chicken, with less fat, more protein, and is far healthier than beef or pork. We avoid an extremely healthy food, it becomes habit: “No turkey, thanks, I have got a big day tomorrow”. Myths 1, wisdom 0.
The mantra that people should consume eight glasses of water a day appears to have originated in a 1945 report that said that in a healthy lifestyles diet much of this water would be contained in vegetables and fruit, and included coffee and tea as well. I have a couple cups of organic coffee mixed with some decaf and then switch to tea as studies now show that teas can both cause yo to be more alert but also more relaxed. Cut back on the obsession about water, and all those plastic bottles are so unnecessary. Studies have shown most of these billions of plastic bottles are filled with municipal tap water more often than not.
Now we know healthy lifestyles, proper diet and regular exercise keeps the brain nimble, black plum and raisins are most powerful brain cleaners of fats To feel you are using 200 per cent of your brain, science says a glass of prune juice each evening will have your brain neurons eager for action.
These days, unlike the days of Ancient science books, scientists all report their finding and millions of other scientists pounce on that data and see if they can replicate it. If not, all heck breaks loose; but in these cases, science has looked at millions of samples. We should pay attention and adapt our behavior patterns when such important news gets buried in the back pages and time moves on. We all deserve the good news that makes for healthy lifestyles.
