Whenever parents start a new program to change their child’s behavior, something interesting happens. The child’s behavior actually gets WORSE! You worked so hard to implement these new changes, that experiencing more frustration, makes you want to throw in the towel. How in the world does this happen?
There is a very understandable explanation to this. I would like to compare this normal phenomenon, to a marathon race. A marathon race is approximately 26 miles. Let’s say, before you learned the techniques in this manual, your child’s “behavioral endurance” was equivalent to 10 miles on this course. You were not aware of these effective techniques, nor of your child’s “endurance”, so naturally would you think he or she would “fold” instantly.
Just as you begin to practice and your “leadership endurance” starts to build, his or her tantrums “seem” to have intensified! The reality is he or she has NOT built stronger endurance, the child was never pushed to his/her threshold of 10 miles. Before now, you only pushed the child 2-5 miles, but he or she always had more endurance than that!
At this point, seeing stronger defiance, tantrums, and attitudes parents want to give up…DON’T. Keep pushing yourself, and building up your leadership “tolerance”. With deliberate practice, you will soon get to 9, 10, even 11-15 miles…and guess what…the child will fold! You just have to work until that shift in power becomes clear. That day will come, and if you stick to it, your relationship can change in a few short weeks.
Do you want to learn exactly how to eliminate your child’s out-of-control and defiant behavior without using Punishments, Time-Outs, Behavioral Plans, or Rewards?
