Deciding to Have a Child

So, you want to have a baby?

There comes an age and time in life when every person coupled or otherwise considers the question of whether or not to have a child. For some people, this is a no-brainer and they know from the time they are very young that children are in their future. For others, it is once that causes distress, concerns and worries because the urge is just not there. And still, for others it becomes an impossibility or an accidental decision. Having a baby is a huge step in life often seen as the entrance to the threshold of adulthood. There is lots of pressure, silent and outward, on people to have a baby and it is almost as if choosing otherwise is some sort of abomination.

In today’s world where men and women are becoming more equal, financially independent and are encouraged to develop passions outside of hearth and home the sheer thought of having a baby can be disgruntling. Regardless of what you think, what you have been told or what your imagination dreams of your future to be – having a child changes everything in more ways than imaginable. Some of those ways are more positive than you thought possible and others can be frustrating leaving parents to feel as if they have just entered a life sentence. Which in so many ways, they have.

The crazy thing about the decision to have children is it isn’t one that can be made early in life. It can’t be a set as a feasible goal because life changes so quickly. One minute you are in high school, college and pursuing a career-thinking babies are the enemy and a year later you are so deeply in love that you can’t imagine not sharing this special feat with that someone special. Furthermore once you make the decision to have a child and follow through, there is absolutely no turning back to the life you left. It is an all or nothing endeavor.

For intensive purposes, it is probably best to weigh the pros and cons of having children before you embark on the journey. Unfortunately, it is like concocting a travel plan to Pluto, because you don’t know the real pros and cons of having children until you do so. How could you, really? Even people who have children can’t really find the words or pinpoint the feelings of watching a birth or witnessing a first step. Having children is one of those things in life that is indefinable and felt differently by every person. It is the inhuman mixture of love and passion, fear and worry, excitement and anxiety, frustration and stress.

At the risk of sounding trite, the best way to decide whether or not having children is your destiny or not is to allow your destiny to just unfold. Keeping an open mind and realizing that should the embodiment of a child be right for you it will show itself to you at some point ensures you will not be pressured, disappointed or anxious about it. In other words, never say never and don’t place all your genetic eggs in one basket. When the time is right to have children, whether on purpose or accidentally, it will happen. Sometimes the best way to choose whether or not to become a parent and to decide if you are ready for it or not is to face the music when it begins to play.

Contrary to what you may believe in this moment, ten years ago or five years from now – having children may or may not be important in your life. Even the best laid plans can fail which means that the little pink line that says a baby is coming can and does happen to people who are both sides of the fence when it comes to this issue.

Your ultimate decision and desire to have children is one that only you can make. Having faith that the right things in your life will happen, in the proper order and that whatever your future holds, either with children or otherwise, will be happy and abundant is the best stance to take on the issue. Who knows, your decisions and thoughts are as uncertain as summer rains in the dessert and you just never really know all the answers in life for sure.

The New Baby, And The Firstborn

Yes, the new baby IS going to stay forever.

No, we will NOT trade the new baby for a puppy.

No matter how excited your first child seems to be about the new baby, there will come a time when he or she decides that maybe a baby brother or sister was not such a good idea. It’s natural and normal, and it will pass, (though will occasionally come back again throughout the lives of all siblings).

All the preparations you made to help the first child adjust to the idea of a new brother or sister, are going to forgotten by the child the first time that the new baby interrupts attention that used to be reserved just for him, or her.

They will not remember how fun it was to pick out the name, or the toys, or the cute little clothes. They won’t recall how exciting it was to feel the baby move inside Mommy’s tummy, or to hold the new baby.

They will remember when they didn’t have to share their toys, or their room. They will recall when they got to sit on Daddy’s lap during a story, and when they didn’t have to be quiet all the time because there was no baby who might wake up.

Jealousy is natural for small children and for older kids too. There are ways to help the children cope with their feelings, and to feel better about sharing you, and their lives.

Make time just for the first child, when the new baby will not interrupt. Mom takes the older child for a walk, while Dad stays home with the baby, and take turns. This also gives the new baby undivided attention from each parent as well.

Share the acts of caring for the baby with the older child, let them pick out an outfit, or hold a bottle for the baby.

Talk to them about all the ways the baby makes the family stronger, and better. Such as that, every person in the family means that there is more love in the family.

Be patient, and understanding. Eventually the older child will not only accept their new sibling, but love the new baby too. The wanting a puppy, that never goes away.

Taking a 2nd Look At Cloth Diapers

If you抮e a new parent, you抳e probably heard your grandparents telling you how lucky you are and singing the praises of disposable diapers. Way back then, the only option was cloth diapers, which require a ton of laundry work. See, less than thirty years ago, disposable diapers were considered a luxury. Nowadays, everyone uses cloth diapers and people that use cloth diapers for their babies are considered to be odd. There are several reasons that modern parents might want to use cloth diapers instead of disposables, and, believe it or not, cloth diapers are starting to make a bit of a comeback.

The main reason that a parent may choose to start using cloth diapers instead of the name brand disposables is the cost. Cloth diapers are much cheaper than disposables, even if the parents are paying a diaper service to haul away the used diapers and bring clean ones each week. Disposable diapers can easily cost well over one hundred dollars per month or more, and you抣l be paying this expense every month for around two years. Many parents are starting to forgo the convenience of disposables to save this extra money.

There are also environmental issues to consider. Disposable diapers are made out of plastic and a pad of absorbent cotton. Plastic does not biodegrade well at all, which means that our landfills are filled with diapers that aren抰 going away anytime soon. Most people believe that the convenience offered by disposable diapers outweighs this fact. They might not consciously make this choice, but their actions speak for themselves. Environmentalists believe that those who use cloth diapers are taking one small step which goes a long way to protect and preserve the Earth for future generations.

Those whiny parents and grandparents might still have a few bones to pick with today抯 parents who decide on using cloth diapers, because the today抯 cloth diapers are much different from those that they were using on their own kids and grandkids several decades ago. They are used to awkward folding and having to use safety pins to fasten the diaper to the baby. Modern cloth diapers are pre-cut and shaped to cover the baby抯 backside quickly and easily. They also have Velcro fasteners or snaps to make it easier to secure. One other added feature is that many cloth diapers now come with a flushable, biodegradable paper lining hold in solid waste so you can easily flush it down the toilet. So no more stinky diapers sitting around waiting for trash pickup day.

Cloth diapers are currently used by only a very small percentage of parents, but they are still out there and available. Any parent concerned with the cost or environmental impact of disposable diapers should seriously consider going with cloth.

I know how you feel, for a mom like me, each and every photo of their kid is simply the best. But you must also think that there are so many babies around the world, so you need to select that winning piece out of your archive. There are few things to consider while selecting the photos. The first important one is that, you should always try to select a photo where in your baby抯 face is clearly visible and the voters or the judges (depending on the competition) can see the child抯 expressions very clearly. Try to send in a photo with good quality and avoid sending blurred or not too clear photos. Select good photos where in your child抯 face is clearly visible. Don抰 send in photos where the background is more highlighted than your baby抯 face unless there is a special theme contest going on for beautiful backgrounds.

If the contest is a voting related contest, try to spread the word around by letting all your friends and relatives know and also ask for their votes. Post the contest and your baby抯 details on your personal homepages, emails, forum signatures, myspace pages, blogs etc so that your child gets the maximum vote. Get New Clothes For Your Baby

The popularity for baby clothes has created and entirely new market for children clothing, clothes are now not the traditional blue for boys and pink for girls, they are much more advanced and the trend has spread to baby accessories like hats, caps, bibs and a lot of these clothes have funny messages. Babies are growing; you are unlikely to get as much use out of this clothing as you would an adult.

Baby clothes do not last long because they wear out, or because your baby quickly grows out of them. As a proud new parent buying baby clothes is sometimes confusing, your baby needs three basic types of clothes: pay clothes, sleep clothes, and dressier clothes for going out.

Today you can choose any colors you like for your children, girls don抰 need to wear pink and boys don抰 need to wear blue, there are so many colors and shades of colors that it is ok to mix and match. Most first time parents get a shock when at about fourteen months their darling decides they don抰 want to wear clothes.

When a baby is going to cold weather the baby does not have the capability to control his or her body temperature so you need to dress your baby appropriately for winter so your baby does not get cold. When parents are shopping for baby clothing they don抰 have to worry if a baby clothing store is close to them, with today technology and the invention of the internet parents can shop online and have the clothing delivered right to their door. In today抯 world parents are more concerned about how their children look in clothes because it is a reflection on them. Today抯 trendy parents want trendier babies dressed in clothes that make a statement.

Online stores supply baby clothing sometimes for a lot less than the brick and mortar stores, they also carry unique clothing that you cannot find anywhere else accept in boutique stores. Today most online site carry the designer baby clothes and most of them sell the clothing for a discount compared to stores.

Many grandparents and relatives find it very difficult to purchase baby clothes. If you are expecting a baby in the next few months, the chances are you will have started planning for some of her important things, if not doing them and buying them already. When you are starting out it is so easy to get distracted from what your baby needs and start buying baby clothes just on how they look.

You might even check garage sales and local thrift stores for gently used basics. Many large department stores offer a clothing section for babies, as they are high demand items. How many of us have spent countless hours trudging around the high street stores looking for stuff.

While we all want to dress our babies in clothes that are cute, stylish and fit well, we sometimes overlook the most basic element — how will these feel against my baby抯 skin. Keep to the rule, buy your baby clothes with comfort and practicality in mind and keep the cute dress for special occasions. As the child grows older they will love to use their own clothes for their dolls to play dress up.

Sound Advice For New and Sleepy Parents

If you are the parent of an infant, you’ll want to try to stay awake long enough to read this article. New parents often suffer from sleep deprivation, sometimes for the entire first year of their baby’s life and even beyond.

Here are some tips that should help get you on the right track:

  • First of all, if your baby is less than 6 weeks old, there’s not much you can do except persevere. It often takes babies a good six weeks to recognize the difference between night and day. Their sleep patterns are so erratic that there’s just no point in trying to train them at this young age. Just try to sleep when your baby sleeps and get through this initial stage as best as you can.
  • During the first four months of your baby’s life, she will likely spend the better part of the day’s 24 hours sleeping. She’s also very portable, so enjoy this while you can, before you get into napping routines and are house-bound. She’ll sleep just about anywhere, through just about anything. Don’t try to limit her sleep during the day, as this will not help her to sleep more at night. Sleep begets sleep. Your baby cannot get enough of it.
  • Once baby approaches the age of four months, a more clear sleep routine develops. A typical schedule for a four to eight month old is as follows: Baby wakes up around 7:00 a.m. She’s tired and ready to go back to bed by 9:00 a.m. Baby sleeps until 11:00 a.m. She’s tired and ready to go nighty night again around 1:00 p.m. Baby sleeps until about 3:00 p.m. She wakes and is bright-eyed until around 5:00, when she needs a short “cat-nap” of around 20 minutes to half an hour. Baby is ready for the crib again around 7:30 or so, and this time should sleep for a longer period of time. She will most likely continue to wake up once, perhaps twice during the night until she gets to be closer to eight months, when once per night should be about it.

Until your baby is 8-9 months old, she should not be awake for more than two hours at a time. I know this doesn’t sound like a lot of awake time, but if you spend a day observing your baby, I think you’ll find that she does tend to follow this pattern. Once she’s been up for close to two hours, you’ll recognize signs that she’s getting sleepy.

Making sure that your baby gets adequate rest during the day, and maintains a consistent and appropriate schedule for her age will, in turn, help to ensure that a more manageable night time sleep routine takes hold. An overtired baby will not sleep well during the night. Many parents are afraid that having baby sleep so much during the day will result in sleepless nights. Not so. Sleep begets sleep. Further, if you instill good sleep habits at an early age, you’re doing your child a favor for the future.

Baby Food Jar Snow Globe Gifts Keep the Holidays in Mind Year Round

It used to be that when you traveled, you could find snow globes in almost every gift shop at major tourist attractions and museums. In fact, many people used to collect snow globes. Not only were they a way to remember your visit to these locations, it also reminded people of winter even in the hotter months of the year.

Snow globes are almost a part of a different time and place. They’re not as popular as they used to be as mementos, but children are still fascinated by them. Some children still ask for them when on holiday, but anyone can make one with the right parts and some time.

This year you can help your child make their own snow globe, something just for Christmas or for any time to remember the cold of winter. Here’s what you need to make one:

* Small glass jar with a tight-fitting lid (baby food jars are great for this).
* Distilled water or water that has been boiled and allowed to cool.
* Glycerin (You should be able to find it in most drug stores or in crafts departments).
* White or silver glitter. Don’t choose glitter that is too fine – it’ll be too small to fall like snow.
* Small waterproof ornament or toy.
* Clear silicone sealant. Adults should be the only ones to handle the sealant.
* Small plastic lid such as a film canister lid to elevate the ornament inside the jar. Florist’s clay would also work.
* Decorative ribbon or fabric to cover the lid.

And here’s how to make your own snow globe:

Wash and dry the baby food jar and lid to be sure they’re completely clean. Be sure the inside of the lid is clean as well.

Build up some clay or attach the film canister lid inside the lid of the jar. Attach the ornament, toy, or other miniature to that, building up the base so you can easily see the figurine. To make sure the toy is at the right height, put the lid on the empty jar and check it out. Keep adding more clay until you’re happy with how it looks.

Add cold water to the jar, leaving at least ?inch at the top. Sprinkle glitter into the jar, approximately ?teaspoon for the medium to large baby food jars. Add ?teaspoon of glycerin so the glitter will float rather than fall.

Line the inside of the lid with silicone sealant and then screw the lid down as hard as you can. This should make the seal waterproof. Run a bead of silicone around the outer edge of the lid and let dry overnight, lid side up.

You can make a wooden base for the globe if you like. If not, decorate the lid with the fabric or ribbon of your choice by hot gluing it to the lid. Let your globe dry entirely. Then shake it up and let the snow fall.

Since your children have helped to make them, baby food jar snow globe gifts are great to give to friends and family. They may not be perfect like those you can buy, but they will be loved for the time and energy you and your child took to make them.

10 Easy High Chair Tips

1. Safety – all seats that you are may be considering purchasing must pass British Safety Standards. Look to check for the DD ENV 1178 and BS 5799 mark . If the chair does not include this then do not buy it.

2. 5 point Harn – look for a seat with a 5 point harness, this will provide the highest level of security for an infant, preventing them from potentially slipping out of the chair and attempting to stand, which is clearly a potential hazard.

3. Wipe Clean – find a seat that specifically states that it is wipe clean and for added ease of use find a seat with a detachable feeding tray which you can put through the dishwasher.

4. Storage – a seat that can be easily folded to a compact size is a must as this will allow for easy storage and transportation.

5. Comfort – look out for a seat which states it is “deep padded”. These seats offer the highest level of comfort for an infant.

6. Entertainment – to keep your child engaged during mealtimes look out for a seat that has a character toy bar.

7. Wooden High Chairs – although being very stylish and also very durable these seats can sometimes be tricky to store due to be less compatible than other plastic and metal chairs. This means that you will need a set space for storage. If this may be problematic for you then consider looking into the possibilities of another type of seat.

8. Stability – a seat with a wider base is always preferable in terms of safety as this will mean that it will be more stable and less likely to tip over.

9. Storage Basket – finding a chair with a storage basket will let you keep everything you and your baby need at your fingertips.

10. Locking Device – a seat which includes a locking device will help to prevent collapsing. Also look out for a seat with a lockable tray as this will help to avoid further potential hazards.

The Glory of Muslim Names – Past and Future

The Muslim world is one where intellect and the quest for knowledge are looked upon as one of the most important qualities a man can posses. For this reason, a wide range of given names represent aspects of wisdom:

Zamir, a boy name meaning thought

Basir, a name meaning wise

Najib, a name meaning intelligent and the name of a famous Egyptian writer Najib Mahpuoj

The scorching sun, deserts, and the open wilderness and isolated water points are the natural environment of the Arab gulf, the birth place of Islam. As a result, names were given that symbolized profusion and plenty. Names such as Yam, a boy name that means ocean, Randa, meaning desert tree, and Zahara, a name meaning “flower” that is usually bestowed on girls, show the importance of nature in the Arab and Muslim cultures.

The Arab culture has made great contributions and achievements in astronomy. Given names honoring these contributions are in popular use. Adhara and Suhayl are popular girl names and the names of stars discovered by Muslim astronomers. Tariq, an extremely popular boy name that means morning star, Hala, which means moon and Alya meaning sky are all very popular names.

Arab babies are looked upon as kings and queens. Salma, which translates to whole and grand, Mona, meaning little noble one, and Aida, which means a princess are baby girl names with an air of royalty. Muslim parents choose names with the intention to influence their child’s destiny:

Maleec, a name meaning king

Aamir, a baby boy name that means prince

Kareem, a name meaning noble

The Arab and Muslim world are in a great conflict between the influence of the contemporary Western society and the old regimes. Babies are our future. May it be that these peaceful, elegant names will set the tone for future relations between the Arab and Western world. As the famous Muslim boxer Mohammed Ali once said, “Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams. They have different names but all contain water. Religions have different names, but all contain truth.”

How to Keep the Bottle Feeding Clean

The most important and paramount thing while feeding the baby is the cleanliness of the given milk. It has to be clean and germ-free. Breastfeeding mothers don’t have to worry about it because their milk is perfect but mothers who use formula milk to feed their babies always have to think about the bottle sterilizing and teats cleaning.

Sterilizers

Mothers who decided to bottle feed their children must have an adequate bottle sterilizer to keep the feeding bottles always clean. There are bottle sterilizers which work by placing them in a microwave. These types are the cheapest and it is their greatest advantage but before using them you have to make sure that your microwave is clean, especially after cooking there some spicy food. If not, you have to clean it. And if you decide to go somewhere it will be a bit problematic to take the sterilizer and the microwave with you. Its portability is far from being perfect. The best choice but a more expensive one is purchasing an electric bottle sterilizer. It is very simple in use. First you have to wash the bottle then place it into a plastic tray and then place the tray into the sterilizer. Pour into the sterilizer some water – not more than is recommended by the manufacturers and your electric sterilizer will do the rest. There are also types of sterilizers which can work both as electric and microwave ones; this means you can put the plastic tray with the baby bottle in the microwave as well as in the electric equipment.

Cleaning

Before using any type of sterilizer you have to wash the bottle very thoroughly. There is a special brush made for bottle cleaning. A feeding bottle has to be washed in warm soapy water and the teats have to be cleaned with salt to disinfect them and peel the film of remained milk. And before sterilizing make sure that the teats and the caps of the bottles are not left on.

Some more suggestions

Sterilizing is not the only thing mothers have to follow to keep baby feeding germ-free. Formula milk can provide perfect conditions for bacteria to thrive if it stands in a warm place for a long time. If you bottle feed your baby you must mix the milk powder with water just before feeding and never give your baby the milk which was prepared for a previous feed. Formula milk has never to be made in advance, if you are going to have a long trip, take with you some warm water in a thermos flask and the baby powder milk and mix it when you need it. Your hands have to be washed well before making your baby’s formula. Every baby has to have his or her personal bottle, so never share it with another one, because it can be a good way to share germs as well. Containing more sugar than breast milk baby’s formula can become a real problem for your baby’s teeth – cause decay. To a void it you should never put baby to bed with a bottle giving him or her opportunity to suck the bottle for hours, because the sugary liquid flows over the baby ’s upper front teeth and dissolves the enamel. Bottle feeding is as safe as breast feeding if you follow the guidelines above and it gives your baby all the nutrients he or she needs.
