Breastfeeding Essentials

Many people think that breastfeeding is the best choice for babies. Those in favor of breastfeeding believe that the mother’s milk contains the perfect amount of nutrients for a baby’s growth. Breast milk is not only comprised of the right mix of fat, water, protein and sugar, but contains antibodies that protect the baby from virus, disease and infection.

As long as mother and baby have no health problems, breastfeeding can begin right after birth. Most experts recommend that mothers at least breastfeed their babies for the first six months of their life, though a majority of mothers choose to continue for a year.

A helpful way to know if your baby is eating enough is by keeping track of how often and how many changes they need. A good rule of thumb is that at the onset of breastfeeding, your baby is receiving a high percentage of nutrients in a low volume. This will result in a maximum of two changes per day. As milk supply increases, your baby will need up to six daily changes. After time, the amount of changes will level off to around three or four.

While breastfeeding is praised by a majority of the medical community, some mothers are uncomfortable with the process. A simply solution that reaps the best of both worlds, is to use a breast pump. Depending on the specifics of the pump, which can be done manually or electronically, expect to pay between $50 and $200.

When deciding on a breast pump, the mother should carefully consider all aspects of her life. Will she be away from baby on a short errand? If so, a manual pump is a good choice. Will the mother be returning to work after the baby is born? If this is the case, than an electric one is suggested.

Breast pumps can be purchased at any baby store or in the baby section of a larger department store. Many hospitals will also have them for new mothers. Another option is renting one, if you decide you don’t need to buy one. A mother who uses a pump as opposed to directly breastfeeding, is still giving their baby all of the nutrients essential to proper development. Using a pump is also helpful when your baby begins to eat solid food.

Another important thing to remember while breastfeeding your baby is not to give him/her any other liquids because they could adversely interfere with the milk. During the initial months of breastfeeding, it is imperative that you have an open dialog wit h your baby’s pediatrician to ensure that he/she is growing properly and getting all the necessary nutrients.

Breastfeeding not only benefits the baby, but the mother as well. Many women who breastfeed loose more of their baby weight than mothers who choose to bottle feed. Breastfeeding also gives a woman’s uterus ample time to return to its pre-pregnancy size. There are also studies that indicate that women who breastfeed have reduced risks of developing ovarian and/or breast cancer.

How a New Mother Can Use Her Breast Pump With Less Time and Bother

Many times a new mother is surprised at how time consuming feeding an infant can be. Add to the regular breast feeding schedule the time to use a breast pump and mothers are even more pressed. Timesavers can be found in making wise clothing choices, multi-tasking while pumping, and organizing the breast pumping routine better.

Dress for Successful Breast Pumping.

Wear two-piece outfits with easy access to your breasts. A loose top that can be pulled up from the bottom makes breast feeding and breast pumping more convenient. Another choice would be a dress or shirt that buttons all the way down the front. Buttons that go down only to the waist are not usually sufficient for double pumping because you need to be able to open the shirt wide. Also you could buy nursing tops or dresses with discreet slits at the breast for convenience when nursing or pumping.

Use a pumping bra for hands-free pumping or Medela抯 Pumping-Free Attachment Kit. The strapless variety of pumping bra makes it convenient to put on and take off only while pumping in a two-piece outfit if you prefer your ordinary nursing brassieres for most of the day. Some women have made their own pumping bras by cutting slits in an old bra. You could also try the old rubber band trick.

While you are making clothing choices, note that prints will not show wetness as easily as solids, and breast milk will stain your silk blouses. Other wise (or unwise) fabric choices may come to mind. Leaning forward slightly while pumping will help to keep the milk going into the bottles and not running out on your clothes. Some users tuck a towel under their breasts.

Multi-tasking while Breast Pumping.

If you would rather not buy hands-free pumping bras, you can have at least one hand free while double pumping with the following technique. Sit at a desk or a table. Use the edge of the table and one arm to hold your funnels in place. That gives you a free hand to read something that will lay flat on the table or eat a snack. Some users put the breast pump motor on the floor and operate the controls with a toe. With the Avent Isis IQ Duo Breast Pump, the controls are in one button on the part that is near the breast and the user抯 hand. Another option for multi-tasking is the hands-free breast pump by Whisper Wear, the self-contained breast pump worn inside your bra. Although not absolutely silent and it makes one抯 chest look larger than usual, this breast pump may still be an option for many mothers.

Some women multitask by pumping one breast while nursing the baby on the other breast. Some babies are bothered by the noise of an electric pump so their mothers have more success with a quality one-handed manual pump like the Medela Harmony, Ameda One-Hand, or Avent Isis breast pumps. A good time to try this technique is early in the morning when milk supply and the prolactin hormone is the greatest. Baby will usually be sated with the one side at this time of day ?no need to switch sides unless you feel lopsided. Women who have difficulty getting their milk to let-down when pumping alone can often fill a bottle with their baby helping to stimulate their let-down.

Organize Your Breast Pumping Routine Better.

Follow a set routine: assemble your equipment the same way each time. Disassemble and wash the parts the same way each time. Like the pit crew for a race car, you will get faster and more efficient each time.

If you use your breast pump more than once a day, you could try the following. Instead of washing your parts after every session, just give the breast shield assembly a quick rinse and seal it in a clean plastic bag in the refrigerator between uses. Do give the parts a thorough hot, soapy wash at least once daily and follow the manufacturer抯 instructions for sterilizing when needed.

Some users advise buying extra breast pump parts as a convenience. Have a couple of sets of the washable parts and you can wash only half as often. Some women buy three sets if they are pumping three times daily while at work. They bag the parts without washing them and bring them home for one washing. It saves time at work, and you can take advantage of your home dishwasher. Some women assign the task of parts-washing to another family member so they can have more time nursing and re-bonding with their baby in the evening. Another advantage to owning at least one extra set of parts is as a little insurance in case you lose something essential. If you are not lucky enough to have a retailer in your area that sells all the parts individually, you need to call the manufacturer and have one shipped to you. It can take days for your part to arrive. That can be a real inconvenience for mothers who must pump every day.

Finally, if you are breast pumping several times a day, buy or rent an efficient, high-quality breast pump. A double electric pump will finish the job in sometimes less than half the time, usually ten minutes when you become experienced. A pump that is slow is not only inconvenient, but some users find them uncomfortable too. A breast pump that wastes your time will cause you aggravation you do not need.

Breastfeeding Today

One of the most nurturing, natural and healthy things you can do for your new born child is breastfeed them when they are young.

The first time you breastfeed, you may have no idea how to do it the best way. This can make you feel frustrated, especially if you are a new mom, as well. However, when you are given instructions the frustration can quickly change to a rewarding experience for both you and your baby.

Using a Breast Pump

If you prefer not to breastfeed in public or if you are a new mom that works, you might want to consider buying a breast pump. Numerous brands and styles are available in most pharmacies and several are portable, easy to carry in your hand bag.

In addition, breast milk stores well for a couple of days in sealed containers, in the refrigerator. Your baby will stay healthy and well fed, even though you are not around to breastfeed.

Understanding What Your Baby Needs

First and important things you will want to understand when you are planning to breastfeed are; when to start, how frequently do you do it, and for how long. Since your baby, like all babies, is unique, how long you want to breastfeed is something you will have to figure out. Many physicians suggest one year, though your child may choose to stop before that.

Using Formula

Formula is a perfectly fine and acceptable choice, particularly if you are not able to breastfeed. The key is to feed and nourish your baby in whatever way you can. Today, with our modern knowledge of nutrition, a lot of formulas have similar nutrients that breast milk has.

Even experienced mothers with several children may be able to share the differences that they say in their own infants in dealing with sickness and getting any allergies.

Breastfeeding can build an important closeness with mother and child, that help both of them adjust to their new lifestyle. Babies will experience again, the warmth and secure feeling of being physically near the body that they were joined with day for 9 months. New mothers, especially need time to adjust to the responsibilities and physical demands placed on them.

Many times, breastfeeding can stimulate each of the five senses more and help to build their memory. Over and over, each time the new born is fed, they can see their mom, smell her, touch her, taste the milk from her, and hear her as she takes a breath or possibly even pick up her heart beat by being next to her ribcage.

Breastfeeding is an important part of bonding with your baby, giving your baby the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and more.

Breast Feeding For New Mothers – How Relaxation Recordings Help

Becoming a new mom brings challenges that call for breastfeeding help. Nursing isn’t as easy as many women assume it is. Lactation is a natural process but you still need support to guide you after giving birth. Breast feeding can be a great source of distress for new moms.

Relaxation Recordings

If you try to lactate while you are under a great deal of stress, your milk is not going to flow. Getting tense with the new little one is not going to benefit you. Relaxation recordings can help you ease the tension and anxiety associated with trying to breastfeed your baby.

The body has significant physical responses to anxiety and when you are anxious as a nursing mother, you can feel it. You are already uncomfortable from giving birth and your breasts may be very sore as well. When the baby doesn’t latch properly, it can cause a great deal of pain.

Pain and Fear

Unfortunately, pain and fear are closely linked. As you feel discomfort when trying to breastfeed your baby, you start to feel afraid that you are not going to be able to succeed. This causes great anxiety that feeds into the discomfort. Breastfeeding help can lessen the anxiety.

Self-hypnosis provides breastfeeding help you need to stay calm and collected. This approach helps you deal with discomfort and focus on proper latching and technique. Pregnancy and childbirth are joyous experiences and feeding your baby should be as well.

Benefits of Getting Breastfeeding Help

There are many benefits for getting support for breast feeding your child. Your breast milk is made especially for you little one. You provide essential nutrients and immune-building components that are conducive to good health. Breastfed babies are less apt to spit up and they are less prone to be colic.

Breast milk costs nothing to produce. Formula is quite expensive. You can save considerable money by opting to breastfeed exclusively. This is a very important issue for many families but there is another consideration to make. It is your baby’s natural source of nourishment.

This natural process is healthy for your baby. If you let your little one rest on your belly after giving birth, she would find her way to your breast and latch on all by herself in about one hour.

Support through Relaxation

As you relax into a calm state, far away from responsibilities and stress you can imagine your body creating nourishment for your baby. Picturing this image in your mind can help you focus on the goal of feeding your little one without tension or anxiety.

This approach helps if you pump milk for times when you are away from your baby. Many women are unable to express milk but proper relaxation techniques can help you focus on your baby, making the process much easier.

The ability to breastfeed your baby is a wonderful gift and you can nurse longer and with more success if you use relaxation recordings to support your efforts. Breastfeeding help is available for you.

Baby Eczema – Control Infant Eczema & Comfort Your Baby With Eczema Treatments That Work – Part 2

You will want to not give him stuffed toys as they can become a place where dust mites live. You will also want to get an environment that is free of carpets and upholstered furniture. Also it would be better to use blinds instead of draperies.

Flare ups can be brought on by common house dust. You will want to make sure that your house and baby nursery is dust free. Again prudence dictates that soft furnishings be eliminated in favor of harder furnishings and upholstery. You will also want to vacuum the nursery regularly, and keep it well aired.

If you are unable to get harder floor coverings, you should put your baby on a plastic mat or cotton sheet rather than just allow him to rest or crawl around on bare carpeting. If you are able to use the plastic, that would be better than the cotton sheet, but you do not want him on the bare carpets.

Keep Pets Away

Pets especially cats can be a problem when you have a child that has eczema and other allergies. You will need to make sure that all pet hair is kept out of the baby’s nursery. You also must make sure that you wash your baby’s hands after they have been touching the pets.

What If The Rash Is Not Getting Better?

If you find that the rash is not improving after treatment, you should talk to your baby’s doctor. If your baby develops a fever or other infections like oozing it is very important that the doctor be made aware of what is going on. It is likely that the doctor will advise that you use a mild topical over the counter steroid, which depending upon the severity of the case may be needed.

Sometimes the doctor will use an oral steroid medication which will also help the other treatments to become more effective.

Will My Child Always Have Eczema?

Many children outgrow eczema, but there is no way of telling who will outgrow the condition, and who will not. The majority of babies with eczema outgrow the condition by the time that they are two or three years old. If he has not outgrown it by then, maybe he will by the age of five or ten. But you will always want to be hopeful that he outgrows the condition.

Like other atopic diseases, eczema usually becomes less severe and frequent with age.
