You will want to not give him stuffed toys as they can become a place where dust mites live. You will also want to get an environment that is free of carpets and upholstered furniture. Also it would be better to use blinds instead of draperies.

Flare ups can be brought on by common house dust. You will want to make sure that your house and baby nursery is dust free. Again prudence dictates that soft furnishings be eliminated in favor of harder furnishings and upholstery. You will also want to vacuum the nursery regularly, and keep it well aired.

If you are unable to get harder floor coverings, you should put your baby on a plastic mat or cotton sheet rather than just allow him to rest or crawl around on bare carpeting. If you are able to use the plastic, that would be better than the cotton sheet, but you do not want him on the bare carpets.

Keep Pets Away

Pets especially cats can be a problem when you have a child that has eczema and other allergies. You will need to make sure that all pet hair is kept out of the baby’s nursery. You also must make sure that you wash your baby’s hands after they have been touching the pets.

What If The Rash Is Not Getting Better?

If you find that the rash is not improving after treatment, you should talk to your baby’s doctor. If your baby develops a fever or other infections like oozing it is very important that the doctor be made aware of what is going on. It is likely that the doctor will advise that you use a mild topical over the counter steroid, which depending upon the severity of the case may be needed.

Sometimes the doctor will use an oral steroid medication which will also help the other treatments to become more effective.

Will My Child Always Have Eczema?

Many children outgrow eczema, but there is no way of telling who will outgrow the condition, and who will not. The majority of babies with eczema outgrow the condition by the time that they are two or three years old. If he has not outgrown it by then, maybe he will by the age of five or ten. But you will always want to be hopeful that he outgrows the condition.

De-hydration is one of the more frequent reasons why a persons’ skin might itch, and once the itching begins if not properly treated it increases in intensity, and becomes a full grown problem.

Another successful way of stopping a flare before it begins is to “pre treat” the condition. A study was conducted where the strength of an eczema medicine was reduced, and instead of waiting on a flare up to occur, the lowered dosage treatment was used twice weekly. The results were quite impressive. A portion of the group was given the medicine and another part given a placebo. The group with the medicine reported flare ups occurring once every 5 months, and the group with the placebo once every 2 weeks. This explains to us that pre treatment is a good method to use to stop an eczema flare before it begins.
